High spur is in many people's opinion the most beautiful canyon in the Robber's Roost area I would agree it is certainly high up on the list It is a photographers dream! Although technical, much of it can be enjoyed by hikers hiking down and returning the same way The technical difficulties are straightforward, making this a good canyon for canyoneers of all abilities It also, generally, doesn't hold much water, making it a good early or late season outing
If this were closer to pavement, Tidwell Canyon would unequivocally be one of the classic canyons It has great, deep, dark narrows and easy passage Although a bit short in length, it is a must do if you are in the area The loop described here sees a variety of different narrows and scenery Ascending is required, but the two drops that require ascending are short The trailhead has a great, remote feel and offers decent primitive camping with unparalleled views Although a bit of an excursion to get all the way out to...
Warning! This fork of Water Canyon is VERY NARROW Larger canyoneers may not fit At 6'2" and 185lbs, I fit with a little room to spare, but people that are much bigger may struggle Water Canyon offers the intrepid canyoneer a good day out The crux of the canyon is a very tight narrow section right as you get going Beside the crux, the canyon offers great views, and a very nice deep, dark slot section Water Canyon is a good one, beginner friendly with competent leadership and makes a nice casual day out
Sometimes good things come in small packages! Although short, both the East and West forks of Big Spring Canyon offer fantastic slot sections The two canyons have different personalities, with the West Fork being more challenging and technical The West Fork is recommended for intermediate or better canyoneers The East Fork, on the other hand, is much easier and suitable for most canyoneers It does not have any rappels, but a short rope is recommended to help beginners over a couple of moderate downclimbs WARNING: F...
A short approach, short exit, and amazing slot section, what more could a canyoneer ask for This short outing is technically very straightforward and suited for all canyoneers It provides a good introduction before the more challenging West Fork of Big Spring, just down the road The short and casual nature make this a good choice for an evening route after doing something else during the day As of 2022, the canyon now contains a keeper pothole Be prepared for keeper pothole escape!
Low Spur is not a 4 star canyon, but is a great, short adventure It works well as a canyon to do after doing one of the other canyons in the area when you still have some time left over I can't recommend it as a destination, but do think it is an interesting canyon if you are in the area It's signature feature is a cave-like overhang that is rather uniqueIt also has a short, moderately tricky up climb that is easiest with a partner, so not a good canyon to solo The canyon is suitable for all canyoneers It does invo...
A very popular family hike, Grand Wash offers a family friendly outing in a short package The round trip distance is 44 miles, or if you have two cars, it can be done as a one way 22 mile through hike For those wanting something shorter, I would recommend parking at the bottom trailhead on Highway 24 and walking up from the bottom This visits the best narrow section of Grand Wash in a casual 20-30 minutes one way from the trailhead For those wanting something longer, see the [my:linkToObject type="trip" id="543" te...
Secret Lake, or Cecret Lake as it is also known, is one of the premier wildflower hikes in Little Cottonwood The hike is short, family-friendly, and usually bursting with color during wildflower season At about a mile round trip, this is a hike even young children can likely do part or most of and have a good time Older children will love clambering around on the small boulders that line the trail The lake is situated at the base of Sugarloaf Peak and Devils Castle, which provide a stunning background to its crysta...
Cavell Pond is tucked at the base of Mt Edith Cavell The turquoise waters flanked by Mountain Edith Carvell and Angel Glacier make for a stunning spot to visit Visiting the pond is a place where you feel like the magnitude of the Canadian Rockies envelopes you The hike to the pond is on an easy trail, suitable for most, though with some elevation gain For the more energetic, the trail continues from the pond high up into Cavell Meadows and offers even more dramatic views of the surroundings and Angel Glacier The wi...
Sugarloaf Pass is an amazing spot! In the winter, thousands of skiers take in this view when skiing at Alta In the summer, a service road makes for relatively easy access to the pass, and a lovely hike The access road has enough switchbacks to never feel too steep The grassy slopes the road ascends are awash with wildflower blooms in mid-to-late summer It is a nice hike that is not as crowded as Cecret Secret Lake As a bonus, a semi-loop can be made by returning via the ever popular Cecret Secret Lake tucked up aga...
