In 1879, Mormon pioneers answered the call to colonize the southeast corner of Utah Thus began an incredible and legendary journey from Escalante to Bluff The terrain between the two places was inhospitable, rugged, and complex About 2 weeks into their journey, and 65 miles from Escalante, they reached the Colorado River Gorge and a major obstacle To cross the river and continue their journey, they would need to manufacture a road down to the Colorado River through a narrow crack This spot became known as the Hole-...
High spur is in many people's opinion the most beautiful canyon in the Robber's Roost area I would agree it is certainly high up on the list It is a photographers dream! Although technical, much of it can be enjoyed by hikers hiking down and returning the same way The technical difficulties are straightforward, making this a good canyon for canyoneers of all abilities It also, generally, doesn't hold much water, making it a good early or late season outing
Larry Canyon is one of the Robbers Roost classics With a car shuttle and intermediate level skills, this is a fairly casual romp with a short approach and fairly short exit The goods in the canyon are second to none, with nice rappels, and deep dark narrows A section of unique "slanted slot" is one of the signature features of this canyon Larry Canyon is a recommended adventure to most canyoneers It is beginner friendly territory, with competent leadership Some of the downclimbs will require a belay or for a meat a...
No Kidding has a bit of a reputation! It was originally at least as far as I know, descended by Jason Pease in late fall/early winter Jason, in a bold fashion, descended the canyon solo The canyon turned out to be short but a gem I met Jason shortly after when a group met up with him for the second descent to clean up a few bits of gear he had left during the first descent On the second descent, everyone in the group was impressed by the challenges the canyon offered, and the boldness and ingenuity Jason showed dur...
Did this hike on May 16, 2021 from the upstream Crack Canyon TH It was all dry A sign at the bottom of Crack Canyon, indicates the trail over to lower Chute Canyon The complete loop car to car was 135 miles and took me 4:15 at a decent pace solo Route finding was required for the last steep section going into lower Chute for the return, but there were many options
Pensive Putterman, just off Kane Creek road, is another short, easy tower to summit Due to it's proximity next to the road, climbing it often draws a crowd of on-lookers If you are doing Happy Turk Hoodoo across the road, be sure to climb this as well
Our group of six ascended the canyon on 03/08/25 after descending Slidenide and Constrychnine split between two groups Very interesting challenge but all made it back up! Agreed that the first part is the hardest, our group as well had the most challenge with just getting back into the crack right at the start In the end the move that seemed to work out best was to stay farther out until high enough to move into and wedge in the crack
Wife 2 on 7/15/2023 The route description for Wife 2 reads, "Work down the crack on the west side of the butte," but I believe it should read "Work down the crack on the EAST side of the butte" Overall, we enjoyed this canyon A couple of the downclimbs were a little spicy for the less experienced members of the group Webbing at the anchors was in acceptable condition
Weeping Springs is often touted as the best technical canyon in the Black Canyon area Starting high above the Colorado River, Weeping Springs is a hike until not far from the river, where the canyon deepens in a series of fairly quick rappels It is a dramatic set of rappels in a deep section of canyon The canyon ends with 2 choices, packraft 1/4 of a mile down the Colorado River to Bighorn Canyon for the exit, or hike cross-country to Bighorn Canyon and skip the packraft I liked Weeping Springs, but thought the exi...
Maple Canyon likely needs no introduction for most climbers If you are not a climber, however, you may have never heard of it Maple Canyon is a large conglomerate canyon near Fountain Green The rock has eroded into a surreal landscape of spires, steep overhanging walls, deep alcoves, narrow fissures, and the occasional arch The climbing here tends to be steep, well bolted sport lines with options for most any ability In addition to the climbing, however, Maple is a rich area for hiking, camping, and off road vehicl...
