Heaps, the biggest of the big boys in Zion in my opinion This is an adventure you won't soon forget, and one ONLY SUITED TO EXPERIENCED AND PHYSICALLY FIT CANYONEERS All members of your group must have solid skills and be fit Don't attempt this until you have substantial canyoneering experience under your belt So, what makes it a big boy Size Heaps Canyon is on a scale unlike most other canyons in Zion A moderately long approach leads to a long, physical, and challenging canyon Just when your feeling tired and read...
When camping in the White River Narrows area for a couple of days, we were looking for some hikes a bit off the beaten path This area, which I couldn’t find another name for, so have called Guzzler Panel, turned out to be a surprising gem! The route visits an excellent panel next to the road just before the trailhead This panel is on par with the panels in White River Narrows to the north and is an extensive panel From near the panel, the hike heads up a short narrow section of canyon to a side canyon we affectiona...
One of my favorite short canyons in Moab, Bow and Arrow Canyon has a bit of everything scenery wise Between Longbow Arch, Polka Dot Petroglyph, and stunning views of the Colorado River and Behind the Rocks, it is a diverse outing Bow and Arrow Canyons is not a very technical or narrow canyon If you are looking for tight slots or technical challenges, look elsewhere The canyon is more of a short outing that makes an enjoyable evening canyon Note: Why the name Mike Stimola, who showed me the canyon and is the owner o...
Maybe Mindbender Canyon, between Mindbender Canyon and Not Mindbender Canyon, is a great little outing The slot section is a little longer than Mindbender, quite a bit shorter than Not Mindbender, but a lot of fun either way As of winter 2009, this canyon contains mostly bolted anchors The canyon has several tight sections that could be climbed over by larger canyoneers, but it should be noted that those over about 180 l...
Note: This is recommended for advanced canyoneers ONLY! This route requires substantial rope work including ascending and passing re-belays Experts only! Without the proper skills and equipment, a group can easily become stuck in Lower Echo and require rescue Ok, enough with the warning This is a lovely canyon for the expert canyoneer The park service does not allow making the final rappel from Echo Canyon down to Weeping Rock for visitor safety concerns, so you have to re-ascend the canyon Re-ascending is physical...
Timpie Canyon is a short fork of Shinob Canyon that drains into Grand Wash The canyon is good, but really short It most memorable for its stunning beautiful, and stunning large second rappel This is NOT a good choice for beginners The second rappel is long, and requires skill and friction to safely descend Some are using a chockstone mid-way to break the drop into two shorter drops, or downclimbing the last 30-40 feet This is not recommended A fall would be catastrophic if downclimbing, and rigging off the chocksto...
Catstair Canyon has a lot going on in its very short length For hikers, you can hike down from the top and visit what is referred to as the Catstair Rip-Rap, which is numerous stacked old cars used to stabilize the canyon bank for the road Hikers can then hike from the bottom up Catstair Canyon to a rock art site Are you canyoneer Well, you can combine both by descending the short canyon with a rappel or two en route I was surprised at how much we enjoyed the canyon It is an excellent canyon for hikers and canyonee...
Sunseed Canyon has the same initial approach as Moonflower Canyon but then takes a different and more lengthy descent route back to Kane Creek The canyon is mostly a wide meandering canyon that passes around fins and domes before closing down very briefly and plummeting just over 65 m The final section and exit, though short, are quite beautiful Though a similar approach to its neighbor Moonflower Canyon, Sunseed Canyon is a step up in difficulty Expect difficult navigation GPS required, tricky downclimbs, and some...
Offshore Canyon is one of those canyons that people either seem to love, or to be ambivalent about! Several friends have spoken with great enthusiasm about the beauty and fun of this short outing A few acquaintances have said it was a canyon to do when you had absolutely NOTHING else to do and were right in the area I think the difference is in personality and expectation If you are a hardcore canyoneer looking for tight slots, hard downclimbs, or difficult anchor challenges, you will likely be disappointed If, on ...
The Cheesebox is a proud tower visible for a long stretch of Highway 95, near Fry canyon The tower, with it's Navajo sandstone summit block is very unique The summit block is about 5 m high, split in two, with the top being about as large as a big kitchen table Although the climbing to reach the summit is loose, and not recommended for it's own sake, the views of Cheesebox Canyon, White Canyon, and the surrounding area are the best around
