If this were closer to pavement, Tidwell Canyon would unequivocally be one of the classic canyons It has great, deep, dark narrows and easy passage Although a bit short in length, it is a must do if you are in the area The loop described here sees a variety of different narrows and scenery Ascending is required, but the two drops that require ascending are short The trailhead has a great, remote feel and offers decent primitive camping with unparalleled views Although a bit of an excursion to get all the way out to...
The Gulch, not to be confused with Grand Gulch on Cedar Mesa, is one of the area jewels It is officially designated a National Outstanding Natural Area, and easy to see why The Gulch itself is long, running both north of the Burr Trail, and south from the trailhead about 12 miles to the Escalante River The length makes it good choice for a backpack, though those wishing a shorter trip can easily day hike part way down and back The area has abundant evidence of Native American habitation, as well as relics from the ...
Off of the Frying Pan Trail and into the Fire Canyon! Though a short canyon, this is a fun romp with big views The approach takes in the distant and dramatic views of Capitol Reef The canyon meanders through Wingate and Navajo layers with several interesting sections Most of the canyon is an easy and straightforward amble The crux section, however, requires a few downclimbs that are a bit exposed, and a bit hard! Every group needs a solid climber! Anchors aren't easily available at two of the crux drops
Tucked into the eastern slopes of the Wind River Mountains, Sinks Canyon State Park in Wyoming is a hidden gem Just six miles southwest of Lander, this unique canyon is named for the remarkable natural phenomenon where the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River disappears underground into a limestone cavern - known as "The Sinks" - only to reemerge a quarter mile downstream at "The Rise" Sinks Canyon offers a wealth of outdoor activities for visitors of all skill levels and interests Hikers can explore a network of tra...
Refrigerator Canyon is very tough to recommend The canyon is split by the Angel's Landing trail into an Upper Section and a Lower Section The upper section tends to be steep, brushy and has two short rappels Just when you are about to reach the Angel's Landing trail, the toilet paper piles come into view Yuck! Apparently, hikers often step off the trail and do their daily business here Very gross If I haven't dissuaded you from doing the upper section, I would recommend bringing disposable gloves and a garbage bag ...
Smith Fork, in my opinion, is one of the most over looked narrow canyon hikes around Although the canyon never turns into a slot, it has long sections of beautiful narrows, and several interesting side canyons Combining relatively easy access, outstanding panoramas, narrows, and fantastic primitive camping, this is a good adventure for those with competent leadership, and highly recommended Many side trips allow diversions as time and energy allow There are several great primitive campsites in the area, but please b...
Nestled near the Black Hole, Horse Tanks is a great canyon on Cedar Mesa The canyon is not a slot, but more open with some great scenery, and a fantastic final rappel If you are in the area, this is a good one to do and quite beginner friendly
Home of the Perfect Kiva Ruin and Jailhouse Ruins, Bullet Canyon is one of the must visit side canyons of Grand Gulch This is an astounding area dotted with ruins and high canyon walls Bullet can be visited as a down and back day hike, but is long 14 miles round trip to the Grand Gulch junction and back, and is better done as a loop up Sheiks Canyon Just visiting Perfect Kiva and Jailhouse is about 10 miles round trip, while the loop returning via Sheiks is only a few...
Double Arch Canyon, along with Box and Petroglyph Canyons, is often visited by hikers as a short outing from the bottom, and is heavily promoted by Green River Tourism as a local attraction The hike up from the bottom is very good and well worth doing, but those with a little technical skill may wish to visit Double Arch as a short technical canyoneering adventure The canyoneering loop is short, but the position of the last two rappels is astounding and offers an amazing perspective on the double arches The route h...
Just a few minutes from downtown Moab, Kane Creek is a gem for those searching for rock art, with a liberal sprinkling of panels throughout the area Moonflower Canyon Panel, Elephant Panel, Owl Panel, False Kiva, and Birthing Rock are just a few of the very popular and often photographed rock art sites to visit in the canyon There is much to see and do, plan on at least a half day or even a full day to really enjoy all of the sights Much of the rock art in Kane Creek is either visible from the road or a short walk ...
