The Caving Basics Primer

The Caving Basics Primer

Caves are unique environments that require special considerations before entering. Please follow these essential safety and conservation guidelines:

Ethics & Preservation

  • Caves are very fragile. Pack out whatever you pack in. Never touch formations; the oils from your skin cause them to quit growing.
  • Leave the cave exactly as you found it. Do not vandalize or take rocks or minerals from the environment.

Preparation & Gear

  • Avoid Cotton. Caves are cold and wet. Cotton does not insulate when wet; choose synthetic layers instead. Bring adequate food and water.
  • Redundant Lighting. Carry several light sources. Headlamps are best to keep your hands free for scrambling and climbing.
  • Protection. Wear a helmet to protect against bumps. Knee and elbow pads make for a much more comfortable trip during crawls.

Safety & Navigation

  • Navigate Carefully. Maze-like structures make it easy to get disoriented. Pay close attention to your route to find your way out.
  • Know Your Limits. Don't force yourself through tight squeezes you aren't confident you can fit through. Getting stuck is dangerous for everyone.
  • Group Safety. Always go in a group of 4 or more. Tell someone exactly where you are going and when you plan to return.
Many caves in Utah and across the country have been closed because inexperienced cavers caused damage or required rescue. Following these guidelines ensures these caves stay open to the public.
