Fallen Angel Canyon - November 4, 2022 - We had a fantastic Friday descending Fallen Angel Canyon outside Hanksville, Utah The morning was cold, but the weather was pleasant once the sun was up The canyon scenery was beautiful, and we enjoyed several long rappels; the most significant was about 120 feet in two stages The canyon appeared to have flashed recently, and we rebuilt one anchor and built two new anchors The canyon finishes near the Dirty Devil, and we saw a cool petroglyph panel as we hiked out along the ...
Hideout Canyon is not a canyon I recommend to most The canyon is not very technical, and not very narrow, making it not a popular choice with most groups Throw in about a 14 mile day and even fewer groups are interested! That being said, if you like a long day out wandering on Cedar Mesa, this is a nice outing The route finding challenge, lack of people, and remote feel make it a day I enjoyed Be fit and start early, the miles make for a tiring day Rookie Mistake Side Note: Hideout Canyon is one of my most memorabl...
Granary is a beautiful canyon perched high above Moab The canyon provides breathtaking views of the La Sal Mountains, Arches National Park, and the Behind The Rocks area of Moab This is a beginner friendly canyon that provides ample opportunities to work on your natural anchor skills Retrievable anchor techniques, such as using an OmniSling, are particularly useful to have along in your bag of tricks for this trip Because of the anchor possibilities, it is recommended to have extra webbing and rope Anchors can alwa...
A trip report from the first day out with Ram in October 2005.
The first day group: Larry, RAM, Roy, and I head into a relatively unknown canyon. This canyon, although requiring a fair amount of high stemming and climbing, does not require any rappels, and has a few easy entries/exits on the way through it.
As we near the end of the canyon, 2/3 of the way through, Roy and Larry ask if Ram and I had heard anything. We stop and listen. Sure enough, we hear a large splashing nois...
Did Little Blue exit via West Fork on 5/28/22 with a group of 10 mix of beginner and experienced Canyon was dry, everything good and beautiful! Second rap anchor in Little Blue was not the best - couldn't tell the quality of one of the anchors without getting exposed and on the ledge to test it The downclimbs were fine for the more experienced, and all of the beginners did well with coaching/spotting from the others in the team For a group of novice canyoneers without experience downclimbing/exposure, I can definit...
We, a group of 3, ran this canyon on 5/27/23 We had a blast in this canyon, this trip may make it to the top three of funnest canyons a lot has to do with the people you go with The canyon seemed quite full of water We swam for hours in an out of pools and potholes We found many places to jump once we verified the pothole was deep So many of the potholes we never found the bottom after dropping 15+ feet down This canyon was a total water park! We used the water pocket once although other options were possible I be...
#conditions Ran the canyon on May 4th, 2024 About 25 hours car to car with a group of two and a leisurely pace Four raps as follows:1 Single good bolt underneath down-canyon nose of boulder center/right as you look down canyon ~25 ft rappel2 Two good bolts linked with webbing in pretty good shape They are behind a large boulder on the upper left wall as you look down canyon Please do not use the badly rope-grooved boulder in the center of the canyon ~40 ft3 We utilized some existing webbing around a large boulder o...
Finally did this trip It has been on my list for years Super beautiful Unlike a lot of standard canyon backpacks where you are surrounded by Navajo the whole time, the terrain is quite varied since you climb out of one canyon muddy ck then do quite a bit of traversing before dropping into chimney after passing the little susan mine Every time you turn a corner on the traverse, you are treated to view of a new Wingate monolith Also I found the colors in the sandstone, especially in the lower reaches to be di...
Just over the Colorado River from Las Vegas, in northern Arizona, is the short and delightful Spooky Canyon Not to be confused with Peekaboo-Spooky-Brimstone in Utah, or Spooky and Not Spooky Canyons in the Mojave Desert, or any of the other Spooky Canyons around! This Spooky Canyon is short, but a dramatic cobblestone canyon with deep, dark narrows and even an arch in its depths Given it is a 2-minute walk off the highw...
Spectacular canyon, especially Lower Granary We took 4-wheelers up Long Canyon Rd short approach without any problem An enormous boulder has fallen across the road at one point however, making passability questionable for 4WD passenger vehicles Ryan's beta and GPS coordinate were invaluable I would not recommend doing this canyon without GPS It isn't obvious where to leave Upper Granary to get to Lower Granary and we came across an alternate anchor into Lower Granary that bypasses the very best of the canyon Mak...
