The Cheesebox is a proud tower visible for a long stretch of Highway 95, near Fry canyon The tower, with it's Navajo sandstone summit block is very unique The summit block is about 5 m high, split in two, with the top being about as large as a big kitchen table Although the climbing to reach the summit is loose, and not recommended for it's own sake, the views of Cheesebox Canyon, White Canyon, and the surrounding area are the best around
Sheepbone and Quarry Canyons form a technical canyoneering loop near Lake Mead The route climbs Sheepbone Canyon, which has a handful of dry falls to surmount, typically with fixed ropes in place Leaving Sheepbone Canyon, the route hikes over a pass and descends Quarry Canyon, which requires rappelling Though right next to each other, the two canyons have different characters Sheepbone Canyon is more narrow, convoluted and lovely, while Quarry is more open Of the two, Sheepbone was by far our favorite With a compet...

Well, we survived the night. Neither the wild pigs, nor the temperamental locals gave us trouble. Cristina and I are outside of Dorgali, Sardinia, Italy. My first trip to Europe, to visit the island Cristina's from. While there, I wanted to see the canyons. Canyoning is surprisingly popular on Sardinia. The island is, by all accounts, a large, cave ridden, wild place, with a limestone foundation.
Having done many canyons on the Colorado Plateau in so...

Neon - Great time of year to do Neon. The first half of the canyon was completely dry. At the first pothole we suited up in our wetsuits, gloves, & booties & dropped in to the water which we were very glad we had. The water was cold but fun. First pothole was waist deep & passed by a 2 man shoulder/hand stand. We are both 6 feet tall. Pack toss would have worked good but i'd rather save my pack. The rest of the canyon was fairly wet including one part of swimm....
The description says, "Non-technical visitors can use this write-up in reverse and visit many of the best parts of the canyon from below" I'm planning a backpacking trip with technical gear where I'll go up Long Canyon from White Canyon, then cross over to Gravel Canyon and take that canyon back down to White Canyon Ryan or anyone else, do you know at which point up Long Canyon I would have to exit before hitting an impassable dryfall Or will it be obvious
Long route: NOT RECOMMENDED! The first 1/2 mile is an incredible slot canyon followed by a trek through a wider dry riverbed with high canyon walls on both sides After finding the first SIDE canyon on the right/north, hike up a sand bank to enter this canyon as noted in description Hike this side canyon's dry river bed until it ends Climb the north side of the canyon wall and hike over small hills before encountering at least two large but shallow washes/drainages that require walking around or crossing through hea...
This is a little long for a comment, but quite a few people have had a hard time finding additional info on Neon and the open desert approach, so I thought this might help Decent: 10/10/2020 Great canyon Great Trip Dry except in 3 spots They can be avoided with some skill or a bottom belayer pulling you out to the sand The final Golden Cathedral rap has knee-deep water, but we only sacrificed the first person and let them pull the rest of us over Note we did find a baby rattlesnake in a narrow section of the canyon...
I'm planning a trip to check this slot out It will be a little different approach to it but still wanted to get some input from those of you that have been here I am planning two scenarios The overriding questions I have for you are 1 what time of year is best March/April seems popular, 2 what would you consider the minimum flow rate to float the Dirty Devil with minimal hangups and 3 can you verify that you can hike out of the east end up Happy Canyon I've talked to a few people that have done it but wanted to...
#conditions Ran this on 4/23/25 in a group of 4 The canyon was pretty much dry with a little bit of mud I think we saw water in one bypassable pothole We ended up dropping into this canyon after finishing Benign a few minutes earlier Canyon was fun, but not really exceptional in any way we agreed with the RTR description--we ran this one as well as the nearby Benign to get some sandtrap and a little more partner assist/pothole practice On one of the last rappels, we built an anchor up on the right side when looking...
Weeping Springs is often touted as the best technical canyon in the Black Canyon area Starting high above the Colorado River, Weeping Springs is a hike until not far from the river, where the canyon deepens in a series of fairly quick rappels It is a dramatic set of rappels in a deep section of canyon The canyon ends with 2 choices, packraft 1/4 of a mile down the Colorado River to Bighorn Canyon for the exit, or hike cross-country to Bighorn Canyon and skip the packraft I liked Weeping Springs, but thought the exi...
