Hi all: I am planning to visit Three Fingers Ruins in Hammond Canyon first week of June I am aware of the Cream Pots TH as well as the Hammond Canyon TH as described in this excellent web site Has anyone taken the Cream Pots trail to the ruins or have any in formation about the trail Does anyone know the distance, in miles, one way to the ruins Is the distance about equal via both trails I know the distance from the Hammond Canyon TH is about 95 miles round trip with 2000 ft +-of elevation compared to about 250...
04/17/2014-We had great weather when we did this canyon! It certainly starts off with a bang- fine for me but a few fairly new canyoneers in my group who were afraid of heights who struggled with the first rappel If you take "beginners" make sure they are comfortable with heights, or they will question why they joined you! When we went some of the webbing was starting to get worn- will probably return in the fall with a small group to replace a lot of webbing The fourth rappel following the two stage has been bolte...
Did the loop on 4/7/19 A fantastic canyon adventure with beautiful canyon walls throughout Took 2 about 9 hours leisurely round trip from the campsite great site GPS definitely recommended The first rap had a long piece of webbing tied to a piton to use as a handline, which went into a chest-deep pool The second rap had no good anchor options and we partner assisted down The third rap had good webbing around a log, and went into a large pool which was a swimmer for a few seconds It still had large ice chunks floati...
Did West Sunglow on 8/27/22 Took me awhile to arrive and get down the wash to the first rappel All webbing was good Only questionable webbing was one does as a slip knot around a bolder but it was redundant There was 3' water on two rappels and about 6" of slick mud/clay at the bottom Nasty, nasty stuff Water hole on last rappel but you can easily slide over and avoid this Hike down to campgrounds is a little of a pain Large boulders the whole way and that slick mud/clay is all over When it has been raining you are...
To add some details from Jaymillheim's suggestion to run this canyon in a loop If you are have a confident climber in your group you can do the UP the right fork and DOWN the left fork and choose a route that eliminates the "59 free solo moves" at the top of the right fork See the 3 pictures "Right Fork 1st Rappel Bypass" above As you are nearing the top of the right fork you can exit left as looking up canyon by walking on a sidewalk feature below the shelf that forms the start of the canyon This route requires no...
We hiked Maidenwater March 2019 Nothing required more than a knee deep wade of a few feet As far as down climbs, the only significant one was after "the boulder," and it was easily negotiated with a little creative butt scooting, etc Definitely nothing technical We camped between Maidenwater and YBR We hike up YBR until we got cliffed out, which I think is just before the bottom of the tech canyoneering route described elsewhere on this site At this point, we backtracked a few minutest to a hoodoo and scramb...
Yes I did a fabulous hike there from the main Factory Butte Coal Wash road a mile or two south of the butte cross country over to the start of the San Rafael Reef What geologic diversity! PS: I really love your site! I've found several great hikes here I'm 62 now and in good shape, but your definition of "easy" or "moderate" is my definition of "difficult" I tried North Caineville Mesa and chickened out part way up It wasn't that hard, but the exposure got to me! I walked from Uneva to Three Fingers and ju...
High atop the Big Horn Mountains in northern Wyoming lies one of North America's most enigmatic and sacred indigenous sites: the Medicine Wheel This ancient structure, located at nearly 10,000 feet, consists of a central cairn connected to an outer ring by 28 radial stone spokes Measuring roughly 80 feet across, the Medicine Wheel has long fascinated archaeologists, historians, and spiritual seekers alike Though the exact age of the wheel is debated, carbon dating of nearby artifacts suggests it may be over 700 yea...
At the base of the Henry Mountains, in the transition zone between desert and mountains, lies the Little Egypt Geologic Site The site is an exposed Entrada Sandstone area that has eroded into hoodoos, passages and small towers This is the same layer that makes up Goblin Valley in the San Rafael Swell, and is quite reminiscent of the goblins found there The area is fun for families or those that are young at heart to wander around and climb on the many formations I am not sure who had more fun on our visit, myself o...
Did it in 6/17 2nd canyon ever after U Turn Great for beginners Took us group of 4 newbies just under 4 hours with a couple breaks to hang out near long bow arch and search for polka dot man sadly we didn’t find it Did the first optional rap off a slung tree Webbing was in good shape Rap 1: found two sets of bolts and webbing LDC We went with the closer ones as we were coming down canyon and slightly regretted not doing the 2nd set after getting down The second set was a big free hanging descent while the one we we...
