DDI Canyon - King Mesa
For a canyon named Don't Do It! DDII have done it far too many times! When I was working up to Sandthrax, DDI Canyon was one I did several times over a year or so to gain some confidence in X-Rated canyons The canyon, at least to my eyes, isn't particularly pretty I do, however, find the climbing fun, engaging, and hard enough to challenge, but not hard enough to feel desperate Why the name "Don't Do It" I am not sure of the history beyond the lore Steve Allen named it after his descent My suspicion is the name com...
Short Canyon - Cedar Mesa
Short lives up to its name short Although short in length and time, it is a lovely slot canyon, with some highly photographic sections in the right light If you are in the area doing other adventures, Short Canyon is a great start or end to a day
Eagle/Forgotten Canyons - Western Swell
It is no wonder they built a rest stop and view area on the rim of Eagle Canyon From the rim, it is deep, sheer walled, and dramatic This is a canyon that is impressive from the rim, but even more impressive to actually hike down into and visit up close My first visit to Eagle, in about 2005, was a full loop from the Rest Area down Eagle, up Forgotten, and back to a waiting car near the I-70 bridge over the middle part of the canyon This always stuck in my memory as a good day, but a bit of a slog Although a bit of...
Shenanigans - Middle West Butler
So you want to get schooled on narrows slots School is in session! Shenanigans is one of the narrowest slot canyons I have done They don't get any narrower than this and still allow passage for me The canyon offers 3 distinct sections of slot Narrow, narrower, and REALLY narrow See the note above, bigger canyoneers simply will not fit through the last section There are 2 outs before the final claustrophobic inducing section If you have doubts, take them My First Time Through The first time I did the canyon all the ...
Monkey Business - West - West Butler
Being Shenanigans neighbor, Monkey Business likely is not appreciated as fully as it would be in another neighborhood The canyon provides a lot of bang for a short distance and makes for a nice 1/2-day outing I would rate this as a good beginner friendly canyon with competent leadership
Fooling Around - East - West Butler
Fooling around is a great, and varied canyon It has many potential exits, making it a good choice for beginners The short route is recommended, as it sees the best parts of the canyon, yet provides a much shorter exit The longer route is worthwhile, but adds more much more exit hiking than good stuff
Pensive Putterman - Kane Creek
Pensive Putterman, just off Kane Creek road, is another short, easy tower to summit Due to it's proximity next to the road, climbing it often draws a crowd of on-lookers If you are doing Happy Turk Hoodoo across the road, be sure to climb this as well
Granary Canyon - Moab
Granary is a beautiful canyon perched high above Moab The canyon provides breathtaking views of the La Sal Mountains, Arches National Park, and the Behind The Rocks area of Moab This is a beginner friendly canyon that provides ample opportunities to work on your natural anchor skills Retrievable anchor techniques, such as using an OmniSling, are particularly useful to have along in your bag of tricks for this trip Because of the anchor possibilities, it is recommended to have extra webbing and rope Anchors can alwa...
Road Canyon - Cedar Mesa
Fallen Roof Granary is one of the more photographed ruins on Cedar Mesa Its image is often seen in calendars and photos, and for good reason, the ruin and aspect make it very photogenic and scenic The lighting on the ruin can be really dramatic In addition to Fallen Roof, Road Canyon contains the Seven Kivas Ruin and several other fantastic ruins This is one of my favorite hikes on Cedar Mesa, both for the ruins, as well as the views from the canyon rim The lower trailhead, in particular, offers excellent primitive...
Three Canyon - San Rafael Desert
Three Canyon is heavily visited by river rafters floating Labyrinth Canyon by hiking up from the river Surprisingly, however, it is often overlooked by canyoneers Well suited to beginners, or those looking for a less technical canyon, Three Canyon is stinkingly beautiful and a nice easy outing The two rappels or one long one if not breaking up the rappels in the canyon are at the very beginning while the rest of the canyon consists of hiking in a deep, lush canyon Exiting the canyon requires either a bit of 56 clim...
