Ford Creek Waterfall in mid-winter during a mild winter.

Ford Creek Waterfall in mid-winter during a mild winter.

If you’ve ever driven the winding curves of Highway 6 between Spanish Fork and Price, you may have spotted a waterfall on a bend near the top of Price Canyon. Known to ice climbers as the 'Pricecicle', Ford Creek Waterfall is a seasonal shapeshifter. While the summer months often find it reduced to a quiet, mossy trickle, the arrival of winter transforms this roadside alcove into a dramatic, photogenic, 60-foot pillar of ice that is popular with ice climbers.

I had driven past the falls countless times over the years, stopping once in the summer and not being very impressed. I stopped again in the winter when it was frozen and found it a much more dramatic and impressive spot! It is a pretty falls, especially in the winter, and probably worth the stop any time of year if you like waterfalls.

Visiting Note: If you want to actually walk up to the falls, it is safest to visit if you are heading southbound on US-6. There is a pullout on the uphill side of the falls, then a much larger pullout area just below the falls. Use the one below the falls; it is easier to park at and safer to walk to the falls. There is a pullout across US-6 you can view the falls from as well, but I wouldn't recommend trying to cross US-6. It is busy, traffic is fast, and the crossing is on a curve.

Getting There

The falls are at about mile marker 223.6 on US-6, with the preferred parking area being at about mile marker 223.7. This is about 16 miles north of Price when heading towards Spanish Fork.

If coming from Spanish Fork, it is about 50 miles from Spanish Fork. The falls are on a curve in the road.

Route

From the pullout it is a very short walk up to the base of the falls.

Canyoneering Note: Though the falls is most popular with ice climbers, it is occasionally rappelled by canyoneers as well. If rappelling, be very cautious of loose rock! From the parking area, you have to scramble up to the top of the falls on a loose "trail" up to an old road, then follow the road to the top of the falls area. At the top of the falls are, usually, both a bolted anchor and a natural anchor. The rappel height is about 20 m ( 66 ft. ).
