Phipps Arch, with its nearly 85 foot span, is a very popular outing in the Escalante area. The hike offers a good introduction to the area, and makes a nice 1/2 to 3/4 day hike with varied scenery. The arch is stunning, and by doing the hike as a through hike, you get to experience the full spectrum of Escalante ecosystems, from the dry mesa top to the riparian canyon, and finally the Escalante river. This is one not to be missed.
Be warned, you will be crossing the Escalante River a few times. This is usually not a problem, but in spring runoff or after heavy rains it can be difficult! Check the level first. Also be warned, bugs can be epic in late spring! Bring repellent and long sleeves/pants during bug season.
