The Pahroc Mountains are a rugged and scenic mountain range located in southeastern Nevada. Divided into two distinct sections—the North Pahroc Range and the South Pahroc Range that are divided by highway US93 —these mountains are characterized by large granite outcrops, desert canyons, and steep ridges. The North Pahroc mountains have areas of massive boulders that have become known as Mecca to climbers.
The area lies within the Mojave Desert ecosystem and features diverse plant life such as Joshua trees, blackbrush, and pinyon-juniper woodlands. The terrain provides habitat for wildlife including bighorn sheep, mule deer, and various bird species. It is as biologically diverse as it is rugged.
This is a place that you can spend much time exploring and probably see very few if any people. On my visit, I only scratched the very edge of the North Pahroc range, but am already planning a trip back. I find the striking beauty and deafening solitude quite amazing.
Described here are a couple of short hikes on the south end of the North Pahroc mountains to visit a couple of rock art sites and get a small taste of the area. Though these hikes are short, I camped near Pahroc Spring and thought this was an excellent place to spend time. Not a place I felt I wanted to hurry through.
