The Great Chamber - Kanab

The Great Chamber - Kanab

The Great Chamber is one enormous alcove! Situated at Cutler Point northeast of Kanab, the immense alcove has a dune at its entrance and has become very popular recently with visitors and guide companies for the dramatic views. It is a pretty magical place.

Reaching the Great Chamber is a bit of a challenge. The hike is short, but the drive to the trailhead is on very sandy roads.

Driving Notes: This is an adventure you will need a true high clearance 4-wheel-drive and some off-road driving experience. The deep sand covering the road changes seasonally, and is easiest when it has some moisture in it. We visited in November, when temps were cool and the sand had a bit of moisture from fall storms. In a stock 4x4 Ford Ranger, the road was easily passably without airing down, though did require some skilled driving in spots. Summer, when the sand is drier, can be more difficult. Airing tires down to 18 or so PSI helps immensely on sandy roads, but be sure to air up before driving on pavement again. If you don't have a capable vehicle, there are many companies that guide the route in Kanab.

There are numerous side roads on the way to the Great Chamber. The map includes the drive to help make the intersections easier. In general, the road got more sandy the closer we got to the Great Chamber. If you are struggling with the sand early on, I would recommend turning back.
