The Oak Creek Pictograph Panel. Small, but very well done.
The Oak Creek Pictograph Panel. Small, but very well done.

The Oak Creek Pictograph Panel is a small but very striking rock art site located just east of Oak City. It is an easily accessible site that can be viewed directly from the road, making it a convenient stop for those visiting the nearby Oak Creek Campground.

The panel features four distinct anthropomorphic figures rendered in a deep red ochre pigment. These human-like forms are characterized by a peculiar "spaded" or wide-footed stance, a visual detail that has sparked various interpretations over the years. Some suggest the wide feet represent a deeper symbolic meaning, perhaps illustrating a shamanic transformation into a bird or duck - a recurring motif found in regional rock art styles.

While time and exposure have taken their toll, two of the larger figures remain remarkably clear against the cliff face. Some figures seem to have originally featured intricate internal designs or patterns on their torsos, though these details have largely faded.

Camping: Oak Creek was an area I had never visited until hiking the nearby Fool Creek Peak. It is a lovely canyon! Oak Creek Campground (reservations available at https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234257) is beautiful, and the canyon has quite a few other primitive campsites.
