As promised, I am adding some pics the last four and comments to this hikeFollow Ryan's two pieces of advice: 1 zigzag your way down, trying to find the most comfortable class 3 route and 2 take your timeUnless I goofed and didn't choose the right path towards the end of the way down, which is quite possible, there is one section however – about 40 feet long – which is definitely class 4 At some point, looking down, I couldn't see the rocks below see picture called "Class 4 part" I had to climb down using a crack a...
Seven of us completed the route in 45 hours on 2023-02-05 There was a little snow on the north slopes but not an issue; even in the gully The keeper was full and avoided by using the anchor on the slope above it RDC The puddle below the crack was avoidable by stemming
#conditions Ran this on 2/22/25 with a group of 4 of us All webbing and anchors were in good condition, but the one single bolt is a bit loose and spins on the last rappel short exit so we opted to use the two bolts above it requires a little climbing The canyon had a little water in it from previous days' rain which was a nice change from the last time we did it in 100+ degree weather We had fun downclimbing the crack instead of rappelling it
Three of us went through the canyon on 8/25/2023 Someone has constructed a nice cairn anchor at the first rappel location the 10m drop For the last rappel 22m, you won't want to use a fiddlestick or a biner blocker and tag line, because any knot will likely get stuck in the obvious crack during the rope pull Just use a single rope that is long enough for 22m rappel
Had a great trip taking the family through On the last rappel, I think the anchor has been moved farther away from crack I've seen in some photos, as we needed 180 feet of rope to get down and 220 would have been better to avoid getting off at an awkward angle on a ledge Just read the comment by mesa_rn--should have checked that out before!
As of Memorial Day no wet suits needed, very little water, only calf deep Anchors are getting a bit old and abraded, bring some webbing as these will soon need replacing If you have some new folks be aware that they may feel exposed climbing the steep slick-rock after the exit crack
Stem School Canyon is a short canyon just off highway 24 in Capitol Reef The canyon is short, and not terribly dramatic, but makes for a great outing to fill out the day The canyon will be one I will not soon forget! Halfway through I heard a large rockfall just ahead of me It turned out to be a desert sheep not more than 20 feet away heading down canyon on a ledge He did not seem particularly concerned I was there, and continued along his way after a few minutes, taking a steep route up and out of the canyon that ...
Ran on 10/10/23 Anchor in good shape but the Piton is decently loose so definitely not good for rapping! We ended up sending the first person down single stranded on a biner block and I went down double stranded for a clean pull the biner could easily get stuck in the crack of the second stage all in all a very very short 15 hours car to car but fun canyon if you are looking for a time killer!
Thanks! Yes, we suspected this once we exited Do you happen to know if it's a different crack out of the same gully system, or a different gully system altogether
Just did this canyon We used the arch for an anchor I personally would not even call the bottom half a rappel I would call it a stem/chimney problem The rappel rope mostly tries to pull you deeper into the crack once you are in that section Didn't see bolts, but didn't look too hard either The trail out is almost spot on with the track shown on the map It is about 10 feet short of the wash coming in from the right RDC It was in good shape once out of the canyon proper I enjoyed the challenge of the bottom "rappel" ...
