hike Five Kiva Pueblo - Blanding

The area around Blanding is rich in archaeological sites This site, just south of town, is the Five Kiva Pueblo site Easy access, with a short hike, makes this is a fascinating place to visit if in the area It is one I had overlooked for many years as I passed through When we finally stopped to visit in 2024, we found it an amazing and fascinating site Note: A kiva is a circular underground room thought to have been used for spiritual ceremonies They were significant to the ancient peoples that built them and lived...

hike Warner Dinosaur Tracks - Arizona Strip

Everybody loves dinosaur tracks! Well, our family does, at least The Warner Valley Dinosaur Track Site is a well-known paleontological site located near St George, Utah It features numerous fossilized dinosaur tracks preserved in the sandstone of the early Jurassic Moenave Formation, dating back around 190 million years The tracks were left by various species of dinosaurs when this region was a muddy floodplain What we found particularly interesting about the site is the large number of tracks and different types o...

Comment on Sheiks Canyon - Grand Gulch

My wife and I tried hiking Sheiks Canyon but came to a deep and, for us, dangerous pour-off We couldn't figure out how to negotiate it down Any tips

Comment on Moonhouse Ruin (McCloyd Canyon) - Cedar Mesa

We tried to make this hike twice but were held back by snow But it was so worth the frustration when we finally did get in the permit system is great, few people The one thing I would say is it is good to have a partner to help push or pull over one pour off on the way back out You have to stand on a loose pile of rocks to accomplish that

Comment on Wonderland Canyon - Capitol Reef

I just finished Wonderland on 4/19/2019 3 of us took 7 hours to do it, including a lunch break and removing gear after the final rap I was really impressed by this canyon and passed a few side canyons that would have been great to exploreAll the anchors and webbing were in good shape We brought a sand trap and ibis hooks just in case On the 200ft rap we sent one person down to the middle landing to give the next people a fireman belay, as you can't see all the way to the top lip when on the very bottom This sequen...

Comment on Upper Stair Canyon - North Wash

Did this two days ago and after finishing up the bonus R rated section we kept going to the end of a pour off and found an anchor and what looked to be a reasonable rap We did not bring a rope so did not do it Anyone know where it leads

Comment on Middle Fork of Maidenwater - Trachyte

We descended this canyon 9-29-19 with 5 kids and 5 adults After a bit of wandering, we rappelled just below and LUC the very top pour-over into canyon The anchor there needed some love but is good to go now Great down-climbing practice for kids and dry We saw 5 big horned sheep and a snake or two but no killer-frogs! 4hrs round trip through the tunnel at the end the kids loved it!!

Comment on Sheets Gulch - Notom Road

I entered Sheet's Gulch from the top at Nick's Peak, after about 175 miles I reached a tall pour off, maybe 100 feet into the canyon, I could see no way round it and turned back This end of the gulch is not particularly interesting!

Comment on Sheiks Canyon - Grand Gulch

You actually have to go down the pour off, then stay to the south through the Boulder field The trail then traverses to the north The last descent is quite steep and loose, but doable

Comment on Slideanide Canyon - Poison Spring

Completed on February 12th An absolutely awesome canyon! The pictures and route description really don’t do it justice Almost all downclimbable except for the pour off, though we still rapped a few in the canyon as well including the final one So many 15-20+ drops where you can just slide down wedged between the walls! Also completely dry, and the webbing was all in good condition except for one of the optional downclimbs
