Comment on Not Mindbender Canyon - Robbers Roost
A friend and I did this canyon yesterday and I feel that the difficulty of the Moki exit is a bit understated The climbing isn't that difficult though it may very well rate higher than 55 in my opinion Aside from difficulty one also has to factor in a certain level of fatigue from spending a long day in the canyon and the amount of exposure on the climb I was able to free solo the exit and then belay my friend up but I seriously have to wonder how someone with little climbing experience would have made it I feel th...
Comment on Cassidy Arch Canyon - Capitol Reef
04/17/2014-We had great weather when we did this canyon! It certainly starts off with a bang- fine for me but a few fairly new canyoneers in my group who were afraid of heights who struggled with the first rappel If you take "beginners" make sure they are comfortable with heights, or they will question why they joined you! When we went some of the webbing was starting to get worn- will probably return in the fall with a small group to replace a lot of webbing The fourth rappel following the two stage has been bolte...
Comment on Mindbender Canyon - Robbers Roost
Overall we would consider this not only shorter than Not Mindbender but also easier A "beginner-friendly" canyon if they can handle the final, big, free rappel, which is quite spectacular Very few technical section with longer stretches of canyon walking The only real problems are at the rappels/drops
Comment on Granary Canyon - Moab
Hey Ryan,
Firstly, thanks so much for providing this great information! I know it's in everyone's best interest to protect canyons from over-visiting, but it sure is nice to find some detailed topos We are climbers but not regular canyoneers, and the information provided here is wonderfully detailed
Do you have any recommendations for camping near Granary Canyon The more dispersed the better, and I know there's some BLM land in the area but we'll be arriving Thursday around 11:00pm, so we'd love to have a speci...
Comment on Fantasy Canyon - Vernal
I'm thinking about going here this weekend with my Bf and dog On another website it says there is primitive camping here Would it be a good place for us to camp and let the dog run free How long of a drive is it from SLC Would a Toyota Tacoma make it down the roads - Alicia
Comment on Fantasy Canyon - Vernal
OK primitive camping, I doubt anyone would be around, so the dog running free would probably be fine It's about 35 or so hours from SLC In most seasons, the roads are easily passable by all vehicles This time of year, I would be concerned about mud and/or snow, which could make the roads impassable You might want to call the Vernal BLM office 435 781-4400 and see if they know current conditions
Comment on MMI Canyon - Arches National Park
Descended MMI on 4/20/2016 The last mandatory 100' rappel we could not pull our ropes through the rappel ring at the anchor after we were done rappelling due to the ropes getting stuck in the very deeply worn rope grooves at the edge of the rappel I had to ascend all the way up to free the ropes, which took considerable effort and reposition the rappel as far on the rappeler's left you could go to not have the ropes get wedged in the grooves once again There seems to be a need for bolts to the rappeler's left to el...
Comment on Nighthawk Canyon - Grand Wash
Sure According to the ACA scale, 4 would involve: "1 difficult and exposed free climbing and/or down-climbing, 2 climbing using direct aid, 3 multi-pitch rappels, 4 complex rope work ie guided rappels, deviations, rebelays, 5 obscure or indistinct natural anchors, 6 advanced problem-solving and anchor-building skills " We didn't find anything very difficult, except one downclimb near the beginning that was quite hard For that obstacle, we could have built an anchor and rappelled but used a partner catch instead Eve...
Comment on Refrigerator Canyon - Zion Main Canyon
fun little canyon to do A anchor was put in at the top of the down climbs which made it easier to doThe free hang at the end made the canyon worth doing
Comment on Nighthawk Canyon - Grand Wash
Be careful on the long rappel to make sure the length of the webbing and size of the blocking carabiner does not make the rope pull difficult We used too large of a carabiner, due to a large link, and the carabiner got jammed in the narrow edge we ended up having to ascend the rope to the very top in order to pull the rope free and complete the canyon
