Roadside Attraction Fool Creek Rock Art
Leamington
Overview
The north side of Fool Creek Peak descends steeply to the desert landscape below. Unlike the more lush south side of Fool Creek Peak, where Oak Creek flows, the north side is dry and barren.
On the foothills of this north side of Fool Creek Peak is a wash that cuts through a stunning colorful layer of Prospect Mountain Quartzite. This exposed area appears to have a seasonal spring coming out of the rock. This is the site of the Fool Creek Pictograph panel. The panel is fascinating, with geometric shapes that are very different from other sites I have seen in the area.
I thought the panel was fascinating, but I thought the colorful and sculpted rock was equally stunning. The panel is also the site of some early 1900s graffiti, clearly an interesting place for people to visit over the millennia.
