Well, thought I'd toss a quick TR in case anyone is interested. I enjoy writing them more than you probably enjoy reading them.... Friday I met up with a friend in Arches for Off-balanced rock. The temp, a balmy 30-something with a breeze, proved too harsh, so we scoped out some climbs I want to do, and did the tourist thing... A nice, casual day! By late afternoon, my partner was looking at the cold night to come with utter dread, so she decided to bail to the warmth and comfort of i......

Imlay Christmas Day

Day 3 - Fortune favors the bold... most of the time.. As is the usual on a Ram trip, we get an early start, getting up at 3AM, and starting to drive to the trailhead before 4. Yawn! By 5AM we are geared up and leaving the Grotto trailhead. Man it feels early, but the main canyon is quiet and peaceful in the moonless early hours. We make good time, reaching the split off from the West Rim trail to go to Imlay just a few minutes before the sun begins lighting the day. I have to admit to hav......

Christmas in Zion

Ram had extended an invite for me to join him, Aaron, and Tim in Zion for a Imlay on Christmas Day. Yikes, sounds cold, but I didn't have any other plans, and hadn't done anything crazy in awhile, so I accepted his generous invitation. After a lengthy discussion with Brian C. though, I got a little worried. I've done a lot of canyons in Zion, but none in the winter. He warned winter conditions are a whole different ball game. To make sure I could bring a good A game, I decided to go down early......

A late Thursday afternoon call...

So, late one Thursday afternoon my buddy Jim calls. "Hey, want to climb the Grand Teton this weekend?"... Uhhh, well, hadn't plan on it, but Cristina has plans so sure. About 48 hours later I find myself at the Lupine Meadows trailhead packing gear. We are warned by several groups there are 2 bears just up the trail. We missed them, but did run into a group about 1 mile up the trail coming down. One of the members had broken his arm up near the Meadows, and they were hiking......

Underground in Sardinia (Day 2)

Guido and Betty had extended an invitation to a bigger group for Sunday. The canyon, if you can call it that, is called Donini. Though done by canyoneers, it is really more of a cave, and really fun. The group swelled Sunday from the 4 of us to 8. Everyone was smiles as a stove and coffee maker were produced at the trailhead. Coffee was made, breakfast served, and gear sorted and readied. A 10 minute approach led us to a small hole in the ground. Cristina and I had considered doing Donni......

Going BIG in Sardinia (Day 1)

For our trip to Sardinia this year, Cristina managed to find and hook us up with 2 very talented local canyoneers, Guido and Betty. They offered to join us for a couple of days in Dorgali to show off some of the best local canyons. We had already done one in the area (Orbisis) on a previous trip, so were anxious to see some of the others.   First up is Flumineddu and Gorroppu, a full combo of about 10 hours PLUS a 2 hour each way car shuttle. Given the shuttle length, we got a crack......

DEATH hollow... a long solo....

I've wanted to do Death Hollow for years, but what a commitment! Close to 30 miles, it would be a long trip. Well, Memorial Day 2011 Cristina had to stay around for work, but was kind enough to let me get a trip in without her. It seemed like the perfect opportunity for a go at Death Hollow. Day 1 I slipped out of work at 1, in hopes of getting out of SLC before the holiday traffic set in. Perfect timing got me out before traffic, and to the exit Trailhead by 6PM. Although I had......
