A word of caution using the water data from the USGS I had been watching it like a hawk this last week, even setting up alerts Based on what I was seeing we made some rental decisions Then yesterday the values for not only the current flow but also the historical flow for the last week shifted from the 130-170 range to 70-100! Not cool I poked around the site and found a disclaimer that they might go in and adjust the data Unfortunately it took them a week to do that
Be careful on the long rappel to make sure the length of the webbing and size of the blocking carabiner does not make the rope pull difficult We used too large of a carabiner, due to a large link, and the carabiner got jammed in the narrow edge we ended up having to ascend the rope to the very top in order to pull the rope free and complete the canyon
Did this on Thursday 12/2/21 Dry suits were a welcome addition Didn’t notice the sediment that’s referred to here may have washed out But I’m not Familiar enough with the route to know exactly where you are talking about GPS track from this site was spot on for the approach Some cairns on the approach are not entirely accurate in my opinion Stick to the GPS Ice in the very beginning of the canyon but not in any of the swims Saw some folks swimming almost naked from the bottom up approach Did not envy them Great ca...
I ran Spry on 6/30/2022 with 4 others We had one experienced individual with us not me Previous to this I had only tagged along in Birch Hollow and Orderville canyons -- making Spry my 3rd canyoneering experience ever My three sons two teens and a tween came along -- Spry was their first canyoneering experience It took us a long time probably more than 8 hours, I didn't do a great job of timing it though It had rained the day before 6/29/2022, and the Ranger stated that Spry had flashed The Ranger stressed that we ...
2023 might be a great time to visit Per the Utah Division of Water Resources:--------------Crystal Geyser in Grand County is erupting! Our division geologist monitors this site and hasn't seen an eruption in years, but this year, the wet winter might have caused the water table to rise, resulting in the CO2 gas that powers the eruptions to push the higher level water through the borehole pipe
We did this on 1/17/22 Everything is dry to the bottom of R2, then as you turn the corner, we dealt with snow/ice We did a shorter rappel then used boulders on the second to last bench to get to the last bench fiddled both I never did see the last bolted rappel due the snow/ice I guess, so we rappelled of of the small boulders left of the large boulder above the corner, which was around 80' to the bottom of the corner The approach was in the sun and snow-free
We did this site last week, very gratifying We made it up the steep road on the way in but my wife walked that part when I drove out It was a bit hairy When we got to the top we ultimately took the wrong road, our fault for being GPS illiterate So we got an extra 4 miles of hiking We went back to the hill and started over We took option 2 but were stopped a half mile in so we walked again The walk was easy Pictographs were great Met another older couple who also got their directions here Recommended the Mo...
5/15/2023 - We did the big rappel from a tree to the left of the canyon startAn amazing partly free hanging 240' into the narrows before the pothole Still full of sand and only just over hip deep, easy to escape We left our 300' rope and picked it and the anchor up after running the canyon The standard escape was more exposed than we expected, maybe worth mentioning in the beta Not hard climbing, just exposed We took our normal North West backpacks through the canyon and they were too large Bit of a hassle to drag ...
Just want to second the caution on the 2nd to last rappel We were one of those unfortunate groups when we did this canyon in July 2015 that got our rope stuck in the chockstone pulling it Trying to free it caused us to exit the canyon after dark, and we ended up just cutting the rope since we couldn't see enough to ascend and weren't sure if there was somewhere to set up an anchor on the chockstone On the bright side, the Narrows in the dark is gorgeous! And we actually opted for the alternate approach, using a 2 c...
Abundant sunshine, wildflowers and green foliage Beautiful solitude In Friday/out Saturday Most potholes were jumpers and brimming with relatively clean but breathtakingly cold water 3mm & 4mm suits Neoprene socks teeth chattering was the norm start to finish Such is life as a Canyon crawler Big whoop Wouldn’t change it Pit was 2/3 full I free climbed over and meat anchored the ascension of the other 5 in our group after they jumped in Saved a ton of time All anchors and webbing in…well enough condition to instill ...
