If there is one adventurous hike to do in the Cederberg Wilderness Area, this is it! Very popular, and for good reason, this is a hike with an adventurous feel and is a lot of fun Many people just do the Wolfberg Cracks I would recommend adding the additional miles to see Wolfberg Arch as well Once up the cracks, the hiking along the top to the arch is easy and very stunning This is an amazing hike that is do-able most any time The steep part of the hike is in the shade much of the day, making it approachable even ...
Did this hike on May 16, 2021 from the upstream Crack Canyon TH It was all dry A sign at the bottom of Crack Canyon, indicates the trail over to lower Chute Canyon The complete loop car to car was 135 miles and took me 4:15 at a decent pace solo Route finding was required for the last steep section going into lower Chute for the return, but there were many options
#conditions Party of 2, completed in about 35 hours on 10/11/24 Rappelled in from the ledge and the final crack, downclimbed everything else Webbing present in three parts of the final rap Top chockstone and boulder a few feet below just before the crack turns had ok webbing, but the webbing on the last chockstone only visible after I had rapped from higher was thrashed Canyon was totally dry Forgot to bring elbow pads so I ended up putting my knee pads on my elbows but only after I paid the canyon tribute with som...
Did this recently and it was great A few notes: Rappel 2 the double stage - it's relatively easy to down climb the second stage of the rappel Rappel 5 - This is 36 meters We have a full 70 meter rope and it didn't make it There was evidence of an old anchor lower than the existing anchor so hence the height discrepancy There's an easy down climb skiers right so if you've got a shorter rope you can still navigate this Final, sixth rappel - There's a ton of tat and rope stuck in the crack about halfway down Think abo...
As of 4/15/18 the water is shin deep at most, we took wetsuits and never used them The majority can be avoided with some stemming, but you will get your feet wet in at least one long hallway Agreed the that exit crack is low class five, not 4th class hiking Its an easy climb, but you will want a belay for less experienced climbers I did it with a belay for some mental insurance and was able to climb it easily and quickly Send the strongest climber up first, we anchored the belay from a large carin anchor at the...
Completed with a group of 3 on April 1 in 3h45m, first canyon for both of them and we spent a lot of time taking photos! There’s a pool at the bottom of the first mandatory rappel, with another anchor set up on the right You can avoid the pool by using that other anchor, but it’s a tough start for beginners in a crack that flares inwardWater at the end of the rap below the arch, avoidable for most your rope would get wet Ankle deep pool unavoidable after the butt slide down the slick rock just after that Potholes &...
Wife 2 on 7/15/2023 The route description for Wife 2 reads, "Work down the crack on the west side of the butte," but I believe it should read "Work down the crack on the EAST side of the butte" Overall, we enjoyed this canyon A couple of the downclimbs were a little spicy for the less experienced members of the group Webbing at the anchors was in acceptable condition
Our group of six ascended the canyon on 03/08/25 after descending Slidenide and Constrychnine split between two groups Very interesting challenge but all made it back up! Agreed that the first part is the hardest, our group as well had the most challenge with just getting back into the crack right at the start In the end the move that seemed to work out best was to stay farther out until high enough to move into and wedge in the crack
#conditions Coyote Gulch is an amazing hike with amazing views We did it from crack in the wall to Hamblin arch on 4/20/24 4 adults and spent 9 hours for the 13ish miles Gaia tracked 12 for me, Strava tracked 14 for another 65-70 degree weather - perfect, and still went through about 5 liters of water took in 3, drank most, so pumped/filtered more b/f we exitedIf you go in crack in the wall, have a 15-25 ft rope to lower anything larger than day packs over the edgeIf you exit at Hamblin Arch, take 75 ft of rope ...
As promised, I am adding some pics the last four and comments to this hikeFollow Ryan's two pieces of advice: 1 zigzag your way down, trying to find the most comfortable class 3 route and 2 take your timeUnless I goofed and didn't choose the right path towards the end of the way down, which is quite possible, there is one section however – about 40 feet long – which is definitely class 4 At some point, looking down, I couldn't see the rocks below see picture called "Class 4 part" I had to climb down using a crack a...
