In 1879, Mormon pioneers answered the call to colonize the southeast corner of Utah Thus began an incredible and legendary journey from Escalante to Bluff The terrain between the two places was inhospitable, rugged, and complex About 2 weeks into their journey, and 65 miles from Escalante, they reached the Colorado River Gorge and a major obstacle To cross the river and continue their journey, they would need to manufacture a road down to the Colorado River through a narrow crack This spot became known as the Hole-...
I'll take it Next time I'm in the Escalante area We did bring tiny packs, but just didn't move fast Question about that intial downclimb Is that the route on the LDC side crack by the dryfall the way in Or is there something further down canyon to scramble down
If you aren't comfortable with that crack down climb, there is another way into the canyon maybe a hundred feet or so bad at guessing distance to the east along the rim It has a lot of bushes to get through initially, but if you head straight down towards the large boulders you'll end up closer to the arch
Can you provide more details I have done the rappels in "the exit" canyon a few times There is no way you could hand line up either of them so I am confused by your comment The "tall crack" you described sounds like that standard exit
The crack was a savior for me, it was the only place that wasn't super sandy and offered solid jams stout down climb I though
Did this recently and it was great A few notes: Rappel 2 the double stage - it's relatively easy to down climb the second stage of the rappel Rappel 5 - This is 36 meters We have a full 70 meter rope and it didn't make it There was evidence of an old anchor lower than the existing anchor so hence the height discrepancy There's an easy down climb skiers right so if you've got a shorter rope you can still navigate this Final, sixth rappel - There's a ton of tat and rope stuck in the crack about halfway down Think abo...
It is no wonder they built a rest stop and view area on the rim of Eagle Canyon From the rim, it is deep, sheer walled, and dramatic This is a canyon that is impressive from the rim, but even more impressive to actually hike down into and visit up close My first visit to Eagle, in about 2005, was a full loop from the Rest Area down Eagle, up Forgotten, and back to a waiting car near the I-70 bridge over the middle part of the canyon This always stuck in my memory as a good day, but a bit of a slog Although a bit of...
We went out to find the Basket Site and Ravens Crack locations in Rosy Canyon, Utah but we were unable to find them BUT we found 5 other locations that I have not seen written up anywhere but I am sure someone has visited previously. All are located just off Cane Bed Road.Site 1: 36°58'26.04"N 112°52'6.12"W Small panel short climb from parkingSite 2: 36°57'48.74"N 112°51'57.78"W Big panels with lots of art. We originally thought this was the basket site bu...
Road in this time was dry and easy to drive The previous webbing looked to be in good condition This was a tricky rappel since you're basiclly going down a crack and chimney-ishing down
As promised, I am adding some pics the last four and comments to this hikeFollow Ryan's two pieces of advice: 1 zigzag your way down, trying to find the most comfortable class 3 route and 2 take your timeUnless I goofed and didn't choose the right path towards the end of the way down, which is quite possible, there is one section however – about 40 feet long – which is definitely class 4 At some point, looking down, I couldn't see the rocks below see picture called "Class 4 part" I had to climb down using a crack a...
