Dry Hollow from the trailhead.

Dry Hollow from the trailhead.

Dry Hollow is short and sweet! It is rare to find a canyon you can pull off the highway and be rappelling into the canyon within five minutes! The canyon starts with a rappel into a deep, dramatic slot. The slot, though only about 200' in length, is narrow. Smaller framed canyoneers will be able to fit on the bottom. Larger canyoneers will need to chimney above a few tight spots. The stemming is a good size for most, as you can go a little higher or stay a little lower depending on height and comfort level to find a good fit in the v-shaped slot. That being said, this is not a canyon to learn high stemming in, and even those that go low will have a pretty good final chimney downclimb at the end of the canyon. Experienced narrow slot canyoneers only.

Rating Note: I have head this canyon rated by some as quite easy. I would rate the high stemming as PG-13. If you are high stemming to fit, though quite secure, you may end up fairly high in spots and in the no-fall zone. I was also surprised to find a little lower 5th class climbing on the exit. There is only a move or two of maybe 5.4 climbing, but it is a move or two of real slab climbing. It can somewhat be spotted from below.
