Note: If you are looking for rock art lower in Old Woman Wash, visit the Lower Old Woman Wash trip. This hike is separated out because it is substantially more complicated and difficult than visiting the lower panel.

This route description is for the upper reaches of Old Woman Wash, where the pictograph panel often referred to as Unexpected Panel is. Unexpected Panel is truly remarkable with interesting designs that are intricate and well done. I found the panel unique and other worldly. For hikers, this route is an out-and-back that is about 8 miles and requires good navigation and low impact hiking skills.

Canyoneers can visit the panel using the hikers approach, but get the bonus of descending Old Woman Wash directly. The technical section of Old Woman Wash isn't difficult, but is fairly interesting and makes for a great return route after visiting the Unexpected Panel. The canyon is not a canyon those looking for tight slots, big rappels or serious challenges will enjoy, but those looking for a beautiful hike with a couple of short rappels thrown in will find this a good fit. It is seldom trodden and has a nice, remote feel to it.
