Utah's West desert is such a fascinating and diverse place, geologically. Painted Potholes is one of those unique places that really stands out from its surroundings. The rock, a Eureka Quartzite, is fantastically colored and has eroded into beautiful craggy hills. Our family found it an exceptionally fun place to scramble around and explore.
In addition to the colorful rock and fun scrambling, the area is home to both an arch, and a pictograph panel. Both are interesting to see, and right next to each other.
Note: Reaching the trailhead requires a lot of dirt road. I would recommend at least medium clearance to get to the area. The last 1/2 mile before the trailhead has sections of deep sand. True 4-wheel-drive recommended for the last 1/2 mile, though it can be easily walked. There is excellent primitive camping all along the base of Painted Potholes.
