The Wives are a total of 7 short canyons in Capitol Reef that are side drainages of Cohab Canyon The canyons are all very short, so only take an hour or so once the approach is made A competent group can do 2-3 of them easily in a day That being said, if you are OCD, such as myself, you will undoubtedly do all 7 For those more quality oriented, Wife 5 is head and shoulders above the rest Wife 3 is also fairly good Beyond that, I would not highly recommend the others Wife 4 and 1 are OK, next I would put Wife 2, and...
Hogwarts is my favorite of the "mini-slot" canyons in North Wash The approach offers great views, the canyon is fun, and the second rappel deposits you in a room under a bridge, what could be better The canyon is usually dry, or with one small pool that can be stemmed over The pool is rated a "semi-keeper" pothole, but most will have no problems stemming over it Anchors are fairly straightforward, as are the rappels, making this a beginner friendly canyon If doing it in the summer, start early to beat the heat
Double Arch Canyon, along with Box and Petroglyph Canyons, is often visited by hikers as a short outing from the bottom, and is heavily promoted by Green River Tourism as a local attraction The hike up from the bottom is very good and well worth doing, but those with a little technical skill may wish to visit Double Arch as a short technical canyoneering adventure The canyoneering loop is short, but the position of the last two rappels is astounding and offers an amazing perspective on the double arches The route h...
A short canyon, with big views Smokestack is a canyon you do more for the approach and exit hikes than for the actual canyon The approach winds its way up an improbable gully to the top of Meeks Mesa using a circuitous route locals have often used in the past to reach the mesa top The views from the mesa are stunning of the Aquarius Plateau to the south, Thousand Lake Mountain, and the Waterpocket Fold After taking in the views, Smokestack is descended to Chimney Rock canyon, and the ever lovely Chimney Rock canyon...
Ah Behunin Canyon, most either love it or hate it, with very few being on the fence about it Odd to me that such a popular canyon has such a strong love or hate opinion in people For my 2 cents, it is a good canyon I am in the love it category, though that is likely because it was one of the first few canyons I did solo many years ago Behunin has a bit of a bear of an approach If doing this in the summer, start early to beat the heat The canyons itself is lovely, with big rappels, open areas and great views This is...
Heaps, the biggest of the big boys in Zion in my opinion This is an adventure you won't soon forget, and one ONLY SUITED TO EXPERIENCED AND PHYSICALLY FIT CANYONEERS All members of your group must have solid skills and be fit Don't attempt this until you have substantial canyoneering experience under your belt So, what makes it a big boy Size Heaps Canyon is on a scale unlike most other canyons in Zion A moderately long approach leads to a long, physical, and challenging canyon Just when your feeling tired and read...
A classic canyon that is often overlooked, Water Canyon makes a great beginner technical canyoneering adventure or even just a hikers day out For beginning canyoneers, the many rappels all generally have good anchors and easy starts The canyon is outside of Zion National Park, so no permit is needed The canyon can have 10+ rappels or much fewer depending on what you choose to rappel and when you choose to leave the drainage Note: The canyon has a few short slot sections, but is mostly quite open with many areas of ...
Refrigerator Canyon is very tough to recommend The canyon is split by the Angel's Landing trail into an Upper Section and a Lower Section The upper section tends to be steep, brushy and has two short rappels Just when you are about to reach the Angel's Landing trail, the toilet paper piles come into view Yuck! Apparently, hikers often step off the trail and do their daily business here Very gross If I haven't dissuaded you from doing the upper section, I would recommend bringing disposable gloves and a garbage bag ...
There are so many great hiking options from the Upper Big Water Trailhead Short loops, long loops, riverside strolls, a peak to bag I highly recommend all of the options described below, including an 5 mile loop hike that gently climbs along the Great Western Trail, with lots of water available for your pup and good views on the way down, the hike to the meadows at the headwaters of Mill Creek, and the push up Murdock Peaks with the best views of the area This area does not have the dramatic exposed rock that is fo...
Lockjaw Canyon is a great beginner friendly canyon a stone's throw from Moab One mandatory rappel, easy route finding, colorful canyon walls, and big views! What is not to love! I would compare this to Cameltoe Canyon in difficulty, though would rank it a fair bit more scenic Why the name Lockjaw Well, because it connects up with the Rusty Nail Jeep trail of course! Note: The trailhead marked on the map was our starting point and required at least high clearance to reach Those with heavy duty off road vehicles can ...
