Mill A is not an official Forest Service trail, and the path up Mill A is much less travelled than most other hikes in the canyon The lower part of the canyon was mined and is still occasionally panned by hopeful prospectors Once above the lower section, the canyon becomes enclosed and a bit overgrown This is a hike I recommend for those looking for wildflowers or fall colors Being an out and back, it is well suited for a short stroll The farther you go, the more overgrown and difficult the going becomes I was feel...
Coyote Gulch is one of, if not thee, premier canyon in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument The canyon, emblematic of the beauty of the Escalante region, is often near the top of desert hikers and backpackers bucket lists This is a canyon that has astounding beauty and charm, with seemingly each bend of the canyon revealing a scene to marvel at Arches, waterfalls, cavernous alcoves, rock art, and a plethora of color make this an amazing journey Because of its iconic status, the canyon sees many visitors and ...
Rudys Flat, high above Bountiful, is a popular trail This is one of the few forest service trails in the Wasatch that is open to hikers, bikers, horses, and motorcycles Because it was designed for motorcycles, it has a much more gentle grade than many other trails along the Wasatch Reaching Rudys Flat is most commonly done either via Mueller Park or North Canyon If you have a car shuttle, or are travelling by bicycle, making a loop of the two trails and returning via city streets is the way to go My strong preferen...
While camping in Upper Joe’s Valley, we saw a forest service sign with a map of the area that had points of interest marked on it Rock Creek Falls was one of those points Having not heard of Rock Creek Falls, it piqued my interested and it proved irresistible We visited on a stormy Saturday in the summer When we pulled up to the Rock Creek Falls pullout, I will admit to being disappointed! The small falls were indeed a waterfall, but not much taller than I am! Fortunately, motivated prevailed, and we hiked up Rock ...
Tucked at the south end of Capitol Reef National Park, Halls Creek Narrows is a stunning, convoluted canyon that makes a meandering path through Navajo sandstone The canyon has a bit of everything: deep alcoves, a spring feed stream, narrower sections, and towering walls I would compare it a little in scale and experience to Coyote Gulch, but it is also quite different This is one of those hikes that has been on my list for literally decades When I started going to the desert, a friend showed me photos and told me ...
Tucked into the eastern slopes of the Wind River Mountains, Sinks Canyon State Park in Wyoming is a hidden gem Just six miles southwest of Lander, this unique canyon is named for the remarkable natural phenomenon where the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River disappears underground into a limestone cavern - known as "The Sinks" - only to reemerge a quarter mile downstream at "The Rise" Sinks Canyon offers a wealth of outdoor activities for visitors of all skill levels and interests Hikers can explore a network of tra...
High atop the Big Horn Mountains in northern Wyoming lies one of North America's most enigmatic and sacred indigenous sites: the Medicine Wheel This ancient structure, located at nearly 10,000 feet, consists of a central cairn connected to an outer ring by 28 radial stone spokes Measuring roughly 80 feet across, the Medicine Wheel has long fascinated archaeologists, historians, and spiritual seekers alike Though the exact age of the wheel is debated, carbon dating of nearby artifacts suggests it may be over 700 yea...
The approach is minimum five hours of HARD effort Not moderate effort, but hard There is no trail Even with an excellent GPS, it is still a beast approach, as ledges, bushwhacking, boulder and scree abounds It sucks, especially with a pack I am a pretty experienced canyoneer, and would only recommend three days for this route - one for the approach, one for the canyon, and one for the exit There is so much beauty in the second half that it seems a shame to rush past every waterfall oasis trying to beat the darkness...
June 26, 20235:30 car to car, group of 2We found the start of the canyon easy, 20 minutes from the road to the rim, then just found a spot to rappel in. The first section of the canyon starts off with a super cool drop into the slot, then lots of fun off-width stemming. Not as narrow as the rest of the canyon but many more steeper drops. We found it pretty easygoing and a good warm-up for what's to come. The canyon opens up distinctly before the second section. The next section was much narrower...
Did this on 6/1/22; sorry, thought I posted this already We brought a 30m98 foot rope & always had ~15 foot tails, so raps had to be max 35 feet Half the websites we read say max 66ft and this is just not correct We brought 2 30m ropes, and did not need the 2nd one To enter the canyon, the best info we read and followed was to descend to the rim, then traverse left upcanyon maybe 60 ft or so on loose dirt/rocks above the rim, to a very thin rock ledge 3-6” wide, scary, but it’s super solid that takes you to an easy...
