FloatersIt is difficult to determine the river level in the Chute You need to use the USGS website to see current conditions, but be advised that the gauge on the Muddy Creek is above several irrigation canals The most accurate reading can be found by viewing the Dirty Devil River gage near Hanksville, but this is a reading of both the Muddy and the Fremont rivers So if you get the Dirty Devil reading and subtract the Fremont from itvuala, you've got a pretty accurate idea of the Chute enjoy!http://utwaterusgsgov...
The top two repels are now bolted and are super easy pulls
It's a pretty heavily used riffle range, but I only encounter gunmen about 2 in 8 or 10 visits to the canyon Weekends are worst I used to clean up garbage, but it's impossible to keep up with :- I think I saw your footprints in the area last spring and winter, trying to go up to the FS trail above that road cut you recently posted off the Velvet Ridge Road That would be a good loop that wouldn't have to drop down to the Riffle Range if the two upper trails could be linked The trail off Velvet Ridge that cuts unde...
We did this on 10/28 and took the advanced/climbers exit It had rained 2 days before, but was mostly dry - however the climbers exit had damp spots that made it super sketchy We used a combination of bolts and natural anchors to belay each other with a dynamic rope, and I used an ascender on a static rope slung around a boulder at the first ledge traverse Another group did the route behind us and we hiked out together They also thought the climbers exit was a bit sketchy, especially with the damp conditions I chang...
04/17/2014-We had great weather when we did this canyon! It certainly starts off with a bang- fine for me but a few fairly new canyoneers in my group who were afraid of heights who struggled with the first rappel If you take "beginners" make sure they are comfortable with heights, or they will question why they joined you! When we went some of the webbing was starting to get worn- will probably return in the fall with a small group to replace a lot of webbing The fourth rappel following the two stage has been bolte...
You might want to be a little more specific about the Rifle Range They don't just shoot at the targets in the designated shooting area They also shoot across the canyon at targets and TVs and other junk against the hill to the southeast I suspect that the Velvet Ridge in that area, which you also recently added to your website by another name, might also not be terribly safe when a group is shooting in that direction You can easily get stranded in Rock Canyon by hiking up when no one is shooting and then hearing th...
6/7/2023 - Great canyon! I ended up running through this 3 times with various family members only two at a time due to limited harnesses and had a blast Following the GPX we clocked about 195 miles round trip, I even had cell service in some spots of the canyon There is water! Mostly shin/knee deep however after the second rappel the water was stomach/chest deep This deeper spot was pretty much unavoidable for the first man down, however FMD could then help others navigate around the water We scrambled around a few...
I agree that this canyon is a gem, super fun, very beautiful, and the water made it even more fun Just did it yesterday
Ran today, 2/25/24 I'm not sure if it's the park service or someone who thinks they own the canyon, but the bolts have been cut on the first rap again Thankfully, the tree just before the solution pocket upclimb had 50+ feet of webbing on it and it looked decently new and bomber The second rap we opted to used the ancor on the left instead of the anchor on the right as we wanted to take the traverse line and work on a little exposure The second rap is supposed to be done in 2 stages but someone again had cut the we...
Super cool but make sure to bring a trash bag to pick up a little after inconsiderate people!
