Did Arch Nemesis on 4/9/23 Road was in good condition, nothing to write home about Anchors were all bomber We had two in our group and no pothole escape equipment, so from the top of R3 we scrambled up to canyon left to look for a way around the potholes at the bottom of R3 Potholes looked very full with a thin ice layer On the very far left rim of the canyon there is a huge boulder slung with webbing that will allow you to bypass R3 and 4 There's also a tree with red webbing that seemed like it would drop you at t...
Did this over the weekend On the approach hike down the drainage small amounts of flowing water and lots of quicksand was present But, by the time we made it to the first rap the drainage was dry We could see that there was a group that had done it mere hours before based on the freshness of the tracks throughout the canyon but at the rap there was no webbing I suspect that they removed it when they came to retrieve the rope We set up webbing off of the tree closest to the rope grooves There was some careful rappel...
Did Kolob on 7/7/18 The flow in the creek before the first rap was ZERO even though the reported release rate was 3cfs We were told by several local canyoneers that that has been the norm The release rate is expected to stay at "3 cfs" all summer according to the Washington County Water Conservancy District As such, this was more of a 'B' experience than a 'C' but it is still a beautiful canyon! There was still plenty of wading and swimming, obviously, and recent rains will change those levels even more, but we wer...
Just did 4 days of floats on this stretch River levels started at 8200 and dropped to 7000 Butler, Sandy Knoll, and Swasey were all class II+, super fun We camped at Nefertiti and used a mountain bike for shuttling We were in an inflatable lake kayak, first time with no deck, and did some bailing After that we zipped the deck on, less bailing The Nefertiti rock art is on the right side of the road headed up river, just across from the first bathroom Never did find the Price river rock art, but sure got mudd...
We just did this trip yesterday, and wow - what an adventure it was! I had been watching the flow for about a week and had observed it drop quickly from over 100, to 60, to 27 in just a few days so we figured we'd definitely be in the 0-50 range by the time we started Since we camped out there the night before our trip, we were unable to check the cfs the morning of no cell service but the weather forecast was great The morning of the trip, we were very hopeful but also ready to reassess the water level at the cros...
Low water right now, deepest water in the keepers was maybe waist deep for me 5’5 A couple full swims earlier on, and one towards the end Glad to have wet suits for the canyon since the water was quite cold from recent rains though very clean! and it was super windy… even though Ramp was hotttt by the time we got there Handline is still at the end of Ramp and didn’t seem like it needed to be replaced yet We didn’t run into any trouble with anchors or keeper escapes and the three of us moved through the technical pa...
7/11/22 Our group of 3 did Pine Creek on the 11th, 2 of us didn’t have wetsuits and were a little cold through the swims The anchors and webbing were in good shape We had a hard time finding the 2nd to last rappel as the webbing was green and blended well with the tree it was wrapped around, just stay right and you will find it We exited early by accident, there was a trail marked with cairns that we followed and ended up at the 3rd switchback Other than the rank smells from sitting water, this is a 5 star slot tha...
Did Singing Canyon on 4/13/23 The dead man for the last rappel was solid! On R1 there is a dead man on canyon left and a log jam with webbing on canyon right-- I'd recommend using the dead man, it is super solid We started out using the log jam anchor, but our rope ended up getting jammed in a groove just above the drop off, making the rope pull impossible for us ended having to ascend on that anchor and switch to the dead man for a better, grooveless pull Because this is only the second time one of us has acended ...
Completed on 5/13/23 Group of 3 without bypassing any rappels took us 25 hours I was worried this canyon would be a disappointment but is wasn't! As this was only my first time through I haven't seen the canyon full, but it felt like everything was about 1/2 full of water Still extremely fun, the first 3-4 drops were the deepest and after depth checking a few of us were able to jump in instead of downclimbing 1-2 super nasties that we were able to bypass There was one semi-keeper that required a partner assist to g...
One of the more popular hikes in Big Cottonwood Canyon, this is, in my mind, very deservedly popular The hike is about 3 miles one way to Lake Blanche, but a thigh busting 2700' of gain along the way The reward Just before you reach Lake Blanche, the trail climbs above tree line to an idyllic alpine setting with towering peaks, glacier-carved rock outcroppings, and stunning views in all directions Given the gain and distance, this ranks as a moderate hike Bring a lunch, as I think a big part of the charm is spendin...
