Comment on Granary Canyon - Moab
Great raps and awesome views Bring plenty of webbing A good amount of wading above the waist in October when we went Start was 2WD accessible with some skill There were a few decent campsites near the trailhead I've had luck camping a few miles past the official camp on the road to Horse Thief, which isn't far, but I would bet that gets very crowded on weekends
Comment on Chimney Canyon - Hidden Splendor
Hi I have been eyeballing this hike for a few years as a shorter, not too strenuous backpack trip for me and my partner, who does not like to suffer I was thinking of making it into a lolipop by doing the section of Chimney Canyon from "official" road trip ryan route down to Muddy Creek and then hiking the last 2 or 3 miles of muddy creek south to the trail head Based on the "diversion" in the Chute trip description, this sounds doable--ie flows are around 200 or less; our whole distance in Muddy Creek is below...
Comment on Happy Canyon (via Poison Spring) - Dirty Devil
We had ourselves quite a day of it on Fri 5/19/23 Camped the night prior about 5 miles in on the Poison Springs Canyon Rd 2 low clearance Subaru Outbacks made it no problem in a beautiful grove of Cottonwood complete/rife with surprise petroglyphs all over the campsite Left camp @ 10am which in retrospect was about 2 hours too late for the journey ahead with a group of 7 in 2 high clearance vehicles bound for the confluence of Poison Springs Canyon and the Dirty Devil beautiful drive, probably not passable by the S...
Comment on Keyhole Canyon - Zion Main Canyon
Went on 8/8/23 and all potholes were waist deep or less for 99% Single pothole on first official rappel was a swimmer Anchors and down climb webbing were fine; last ring a little worn and last down climb or rappel option was fresh red webbing Water debris normal and no nasties Overall great conditions and loved doing it again
Comment on Arch (Johnson) Canyon - Snow Canyon
We found a very slick sneak route which avoids the long approach from the Chuckwalla Trailhead and appears to be entirely on state park land avoiding any private land and connects to the Gila trail It is not an official trail but there were many footprints along social trails It is possible to stay on the social trails and have minimal impact but it's not officially sanctioned by anyone The distance from car to Rap 1 is almost exactly 1 mile with minimal elevation gain I'm happy to share the kmz/gpx file of our...
Comment on Na-gah Canyon - Capitol Reef
On Sunday, November 23, our group of seven descended Na-Gah Canyon and completed it car-to-car in three hours The approach hike was super scenic, and we had great views of Cassidy Arch from across the Grand Wash and the surrounding areaAfter following Ryan’s beta to the head of the canyon, we did an optional approximately 50-foot rappel into the canyon and continued our descent The rappel could probably have been bypassed DCR We were surprised to find more downclimbs and another rappel before reaching the "official...
Cedar Mountain Recreation Area - Price
Cedar Mountain, just north of the San Rafael Swell, is one of the must do overlooks for San Rafael aficionados The mountain is an uplift of conglomerate and sandstone rock that offers some of the best views in the area From the viewpoint on top, much of the northern San Rafael Swell is visible, as well as such prominent San Rafael Swell features as Window Blind Peak and Mexican Mountain Off in the distance, on a cloudless day, the La Sal Mountains about 90 miles away and the Henry Mountains about 70 miles away are ...
Lower Comb Wash - Comb Ridge
Lower Comb Wash is a place with immense history The spot is at the junction of Comb Ridge and the San Juan River, a natural spot that funnels traffic in the area through a small region Native American lived and likely grew crops on the fertile banks of the San Juan River House Ruin, tucked into an alcove on the south end of Comb Ridge, is one of the most impressive ruins in the region and fascinating to visit East of River House Ruin, the cliffs have numerous petroglyph panels, including the famous Kachina Panel Th...
MK Tunnels - Northern Swell
The San Rafael Swell has such an incredibly interesting and diverse history From dinosaur tracks, native peoples, early ranchers and homesteaders, miners, and even the Department of Defense! Above Buckhorn Wash, in the last 1940s, the Department of Defense quietly did classified testing in the sandstone here, known as the Morrison-Knudsen MK site The site, currently, has several large fenced off collapsed tunnels from this testing It is an interesting place to visit and ponder the history From the informational sig...
Catstair Canyon - Paria
Catstair Canyon has a lot going on in its very short length For hikers, you can hike down from the top and visit what is referred to as the Catstair Rip-Rap, which is numerous stacked old cars used to stabilize the canyon bank for the road Hikers can then hike from the bottom up Catstair Canyon to a rock art site Are you canyoneer Well, you can combine both by descending the short canyon with a rappel or two en route I was surprised at how much we enjoyed the canyon It is an excellent canyon for hikers and canyonee...
