I don't have any information on Black Steer Canyon yet, although Short and Cowboy canyon, both in the same area, are fantastic Cowboy is a side canyon of Gravel Short is currently on this site Cowboy will be added shortly
Day hiking requires a pass unlimited, currently $5, available at Kane Gulch Ranger Station and at most trailheads, but not a permit Moon House is currently the only site that requires a permit that is limited and must be gotten in advance https://wwwblmgov/programs/recreation/permits-and-passes/lotteries-and-permit-systems/utah/cedarmesa Added some verbiage to make it clear
Because of its geology, this place is very fragile Particularly the soils Please try to avoid sidehilling, making new routes where others already exist, traveling directly down steep slopes, driving off of designated routes, having fires, etc I love me some RTR, but adding this area and this off-trail route to this site will undoubtedly lead to significant new impacts in an area that receives little use relative to surrounding areas
Visited in summer 2023 and there was a mountain lion in the cave so we decided to go straight back to the vehicle I'd been there a couple times previous, though It's an amazing site with a great view Short, steep hike going directly from the dirt road/two-track to the cave Will be going back this summer with hopes of finding it unoccupied

Bolting is illegal Or using a power drill is illegal I have heard both at different times over the yearsI contacted BLM in Hanksville 10+ years ago to see if I could add something to my site about current rules in the Roost I could not get a definite answer then but it didn't seem like bolts were illegal in WSAs but power drills maybe were If you have a reference or contact, ping me offline, I would like to talk to someone in the know to clarify the issue
Feel free to email me at ryan@roadtripryancom for these types of support questions since they are not related to Peekaboo Assuming android, you need to make sure high accuracy GPS is enabled in the phone and you say yes when prompted to allow the app to use your location If the phone is set to power save, it uses cell towers for gps which doesn't work when out of service If high accuracy is set, it uses true gps and will show your location when out of service range
Disagree that the Boars Tusk is closed to climbing Not sure why someone would take liberties with the JMHCAP ROD but the language pertaining to surface disturbing activities is with regard to minerals management, and, not recreationClimbing is allowed As per below: "Recreational activities, opportunities, and uses will be maintained"APPENDIX 3GREEN RIVER LAND USE PLANS OBJECTIVES AND ACTIONSAPPLICABLE TO THE JMH PROJECT AREA ON BLM-ADMINISTERED PUBLIC LANDSREC-14 Surface disturbing activities are prohibited with...
#conditions went down and then back up slideanide today without using any ropes or handlines- completely free descent and ascent canyon was dry, all anchors in good condition none of the climbing felt too tricky except for the very beginning of the ascent getting from the sandy open area back into the slot at the bottom of the dark section was heinous- maybe like a move or two of 511 offwidth it’s definitely weird to try and grade canyon up-climbs, but that little section took awhile to figure out
