Red Pine Lake, situated just below tree line, is a very popular hike in Little Cottonwood Canyon On a summer weekend, the trailhead parking lot can fill up well before 9AM! The hike is popular for good reason It makes a good 1/2 day affair to very stunning scenery Though a bit steep in spots and about 7 miles, the hike is family friendly On our last visit, we saw everyone from toddler being carried to well I wouldn't want to guess at their age, but certainly "of advanced age" Though many groups stop at the end...
The Pfeifferhorn, or Little Matterhorn as it used to be known by, is the fifth-highest peak in the Wasatch Range and one of the more stunning and dramatic non-technical hikes in the area Charles Pfeiffer's ashes were spread on the peak in 1939, and many started referring to it as the Pfeifferhorn In 2013, it was made official and the name to be changed on maps The summit reaches a breath taking 11,362 feet This is a dramatic hike featuring almost 4000' of elevation gain, steep slopes, knife edge ridges, and big vie...
The camp was totally clean for us There are signs all over saying to pack out trash and human waste if the site is to stay open Maybe they recently did a clean up and posted signs I'm not sure, this was the first time for me I had my van with a cassette toilet, so it wasn't an issue for me, but if you're planning on staying make sure you bring a system to pack out your waste Also, 5 miles south of the site there is a dumpster and vault toilet that people seemed to be driving to in the morning to do their dutie...
The Zion rangers guard this location like it is the Crown Jewels of England We finally found them a couple years ago While we love all ruins and art it was kind of a let down after all the research and hunting to find the petroglyphs are OK, not phenomenal We wondered why this site was called Petroglyph Canyon thinking there must be better sites in Zion/ The hike is short and sweet and there is nothing further up that canyon except a dead end Don't get me wrong, If you are in the area it is an EZ must see The...
ACCESS ISSUE: As of fall 2019, a No Trespassing sign was placed at the first rappel in Boundary Canyon See this thread for possible updates For more information, the number on the sign to call is 435-673-4983 It appears the land owner is simply wanting a waiver signed before doing the canyon Please contact the land owner for permission/current status before doing the canyon Boundary Canyon is Kolob Canyons little brother and neighbor Much shorter, this is a great first step for those aspiring to do Kolob Boundary a...
One of the things I love about living in Salt Lake City is all of the easy access to hiking From 10,000+ foot peaks in the canyons to the many trails in the foothills, it seems there is always something new to do to meet my motivation level for the day At about 3 miles and a bit over a 1000' of gain, the Heughs Canyon trail is, in my opinion, an excellent length for an after work or early morning hike The trail starts nondescriptly in a neighborhood and then quickly begins ascending through scrub oak 15 minutes up ...
We found a very slick sneak route which avoids the long approach from the Chuckwalla Trailhead and appears to be entirely on state park land avoiding any private land and connects to the Gila trail It is not an official trail but there were many footprints along social trails It is possible to stay on the social trails and have minimal impact but it's not officially sanctioned by anyone The distance from car to Rap 1 is almost exactly 1 mile with minimal elevation gain I'm happy to share the kmz/gpx file of our...
Hot Springs State Park in Thermopolis, Wyoming, is a remarkable destination known for its steamy mineral waters, dramatic travertine terraces, and deeply rooted cultural history Located in the heart of Wyoming’s Bighorn Basin, this state park is home to one of the world’s largest mineral hot springs The park features a free public bathhouse where you can soak in the naturally heated waters, believed for centuries to have healing properties Beyond the hot springs, the park has trails, bison viewing, picnic areas, an...
Hi I have been eyeballing this hike for a few years as a shorter, not too strenuous backpack trip for me and my partner, who does not like to suffer I was thinking of making it into a lolipop by doing the section of Chimney Canyon from "official" road trip ryan route down to Muddy Creek and then hiking the last 2 or 3 miles of muddy creek south to the trail head Based on the "diversion" in the Chute trip description, this sounds doable--ie flows are around 200 or less; our whole distance in Muddy Creek is below...
Mount Irish is one of the rock art areas that Lincoln County and the BLM both publish information on Tucked up near the 8,743 ft high Mt Irish, the site is among boulder outcroppings and washes It is a large site If you are interested in rock art, it is easy to spend a day or even more wandering around looking for rock art in the boulders On my visit, I felt like I had just scratched the surface, yet still saw many fantastic glyphs and panels Pay attention to the road directions For a BLM promoted site, the route t...
