1 trip Boltergeist Canyon - Leeds
Date: 12/28/2023
Since we didn't get to do Yankee Doodle the day before, we came back out to do it and figured we might as well do Boltergeist again. With just Dad, Nate, and me, we managed to knock it out in a little over an hour. Not bad! Was just as fun the 2nd time.

With Dad and Nate. Did the first rappel from the anchors above the overhang leading to a 100ft+ rappel free hanging most of the way. Amazing rappel! The rest of the canyon was exciting with some downclimbing action. We slung the first big downclimb with the fat boulder at the top. We just slung it with our rope, which was a bad idea. It popped off while Nate was hanging on it and he had a small but safe fall--no injuries. Will never do that again--lesson learned.

Came out with Dad, Nate, Kylie, and Booker. We had the intent to do both Boltergeist and Yankee Doodle, but Booker was pretty slow 😆, so we ended up only having time for Boltergeist that late in the afternoon. Super fun beginner canyon--way more fun than the description led us to believe. Booker had an absolute meltdown at the top of each rappel but was back to his jovial, braggadocios self by the time he got 1/3 the way down each of them. Overall, was still super fun having him along even if he did freak out too much. This was Kylie's first canyon, and she liked it a lot. Skipping the last rappel made for a quick and easy exit even with Booker. Glad we did this one instead of going for Yankee. Yankee would have been much tougher with Booker.

Went out for a repeat bringing along Nate, Allie, Booker, Dad, and me. Booker was a little spooked, especially for the 80 footer, but he handled it like a champ. He did great! Really fun to have him out for the first time.
1 trip Hogwarts Canyon - North Wash

Did it with Dad, Nate, and Allie. We took our time since we had two groups in front of us. Did an optional rappel at the start off a tree with a CEM. Had some giant wasp/ant that was probably about 2.5 inches long going down canyon with us for a couple while. Allie hated that haha. Allie and Dad decided to rappel into the semi-keeper after I downclimbed to the other side of it. With no water in it, they were both able to get out of it without my help needed really. Really fun route to relax on after a long day of squeezing in Leprechaun right fork the day before. Route says it's supposed to take 2.5 hours on the high end, but we ended up taking about 4 somehow. Still can't really figure out where all the time went, but we were having fun. Walking back on pavement was luxury compared to the sandy exits we did all weekend. Should definitely do this one again sometime.

Did the right (east) fork. This canyon had a little bit of everything which was cool. Honestly it had a lotta bit of squeezing and it got old fast. My pack was bulky and heavy and dragging it through got very taxing. It my height and weight, the squeezing would have been a lot of work even without a bulky pack. I might need to learn better squeezing technique or something. I can’t imagine what the middle fork must be like after all the squeezing I did in the right fork. Maybe I’m not built for slots? The hallway and high walled tunnel at the end were amazing. Incredible! A bit long after a 12 hour day the previous day. Wish I did it fresh.
1 trip Lost and Found Canyon - Arches National Park

Did this as the first of a double header with MMI. Super fun and beautiful canyon. Likes it way more than MMI. Coming out onto that porch before the final rappel after squeezing some perfectly brief narrows was just 🤌. Would happily do this again as a one and done. No second canyon—sorry, MMI.

Did this just after Lost & Found. Top anchor was 1/2 cairn 1/2 little tree. The webbing on the little tree was in pretty bad shape so we replaced it. 1st rap got jacked up. We saw some of the suggestion saying you could rappel over the boulders below the steep par, so we did that, but the top got stuck and we had to climb back up under the boulders (the thing we were supposed to avoid doing by rappelling over them) to get the rope down from the 2nd stage rappel station. Bad beta. Due to some rope management issues and the rope getting stuck, we lost about an hour screwing around here. The rest of the canyone was fun, but for someone out of shape like me, doing both Lost and Found and MMI was a bit too much. The 2nd hike across the desert to get back to the car was miserable with my heavy pack. Climbers exit wasn’t all that sketchy. Wasn’t an issue for Dad and me.
1 trip Crumbling Canyon - Spanish Fork Canyon
Date: 07/29/2023
Did it with Dad in the morning before the heat hit. The approach was pretty brutal, very steep and loose footing made for slow and hard going. Never been in a narrow canyon like this before, though, so that was a fun experience. On rap 3, we went from the pair of bolts past the hole(s), but I think it might actually be kinda fun to go through the holes if I ever get out there again.

Woke up and did it early to beat the heat. Just me and dad. Took us about 1:35. Could have done it faster but we spend some time screwing around with knots and trying stuff. Our first time doing a big committing rappel on the fiddlestick on rap 3. Then rap 4 seemed low-stakes enough to try out the CEM we'd been practicing at home. Fun little canyon. Planning to take the fam out there next time as I think it would be a perfect outing for younger kids.

2nd canyon. Did it right after U-turn to round out the day. Super fun. Got destroyed by mosquitos at the bottom while belaying everyone else.

First canyon with Dad, Nate, and Allie. Great one for a first go.
