4.5hrs.C2C. Me. Brian. Todd. Kristin. Boone. First big rap our orange 60 m? Rope reached the bottom alone (both ends). Third big rap (into the amazing chamber) 60 m alone sufficed in the same fashion.
6hrsC2C. Hog1 only. Pie. Brian. Boone. Kristin. Me. 100’ rope & 25’ hand line. 2L water 80°and sunny. Last rap is truly mandatory. Best approach follows a strong path wandering down to rim then, on solid footing, contour past Hog 4 to Hog 1. Best hike out cuts the acute corner off Ryan’s route and then stay in the bottom of the gully right to the top exiting up a short chimney. Canyon was almost dry. One avoidable pool.
LF. Todd. Brian. Keene. Boone. Kristin me 4.20 C2C. Iffy skies- did not rain. I could DC entirely. All dry. Escapeable in five spots. We took 100’ & 25’ ropes.
Pie, Brian, Dean (1st Canyon), Keene, Boone, Todd, Kristin 4hrsC2C, 100’ rope and 25’ hand line. Not squeezey. Great fun!
8.5hrs.C26, 85°sunny. LOTSA mud and water to shoulder depth. Took 5L water. The only anchor that we truly relied on was the final anchor and Rapel. It was two nuts and a pebble in a crack and of a highly directional nature me Nancy Brian Kristin Boone. Did the full Monty. The last Saxon, I’ll be at short was fabulous. Too much approach and hike back to repeat, but got great photos. Approach was trail-less. In retrospect it would’ve been good to hike in on the exit trail and just do the last section of slot and then return on the exit trail. The four-wheel-drive road is just a cow path and cannot be driven on. We walked around the upper repel and only repelled at the last repel. After the start of the final slot and before the final Apple, there is a tree with a choker. This is not the repel, although it is helpful for the down climb and negotiating the tree. Also, if you were wanting to reverse the route and avoid the final repel, leaving a tagline here would be a great idea. Once down the final repel into the pool, turn sharply back right and get above the initial cliff band in a notch behind the initial wall. Once on top work your way around contours and plan to spend some time figuring out how to get back to the common exit point. From there, it is just a huge slog out.
4.5hrs.C2C. North Fork- Not Dwight and Nancy. Todd, Kristin, keene, boone, brian. Second Hand: 15 minute approach from 4wd trailhead @ start of middle fork (which is also the exit of north fork. No water but mud in spots. Great canyon. Lotsa down-climbing with hand-line. Mildly squeezey in spots. Short approach and short hike out! Lamar will have considerable exposure to possibly 30 feet. Beginner friendly with a strong Lamar.
6hrs. C2C. Nancy, Todd, Boone, me. 84°. 3L water, muddy and waist deep water in 5 spots. Shorts (horrible idea). Only rapped twice. Nancy’s limit. Very tight. Possibly as tight as middle Lep? High possibility of wedging. The potholes were more semi-keeper than last time. This canyon is incredibly physical and squeezy for a long time. The crux involved significant body contortions and gravity, defying and squeezing. Awesome Canyon! Not as scenic as some, but a truly unique challenge.
Moki exit was sketch. There was a rope so it was fine. Very very sketch in mid caked tennis shoes. Rock shoes would be worth it
Additional note on this trip. The approach leads to what Ryan describes as a wide canyon and find the easiest way down into the main Canyon. That is b******t. Move to down Canyon right rib and walk the rib to the floor of the canon.
Absolutely gorgeous. Huge chambers, awesome Canyon D,N,Brian,K,Boone 8.5hrs. C2C standard (short) route with staged vehicle. Needed both 100’ ropes for last (free) rap. Very little water knee deep. 90°weather for the slog out. Ugh. Not super tight but fair amount of squeezing. BIG day. Took 3L water. Just enough. Nancy stayed dry. Shuttle saved 1.7 miles of walking, which was huge. Anchors were sketch but with weight testing and meat anchor they worked fine.
T,Boone,me 5hrsC2C, down a little blue and up main fork, and walked back to Road. Kristin and Keene and Brian did just little blue. Keen’s first Canyon. Up Main Fork was very physical and somewhat exposed.
2.40c2c. Brian Dwight Nancy Pico Trinity. Crazy crowds. A hand line might have been nice? Peekaboo was a bit squeezey. Take pads, gloves, helmet for pie
8hrsC2C. Pi, Dwight, Brian. We strayed substantially to the north of Ryan’s approach line. No biggie. Trails are more defined than last time. Crossed west fork and went down Canyon 50’ to Ryan’s ramp out. Entered east fork on the left at the top. Several down climb partner assist spots and finally a mandatory 20 foot rappel into a knee deep pool. A 50 foot rope was fine for the raps BUT- The down canyon walk around bypassing the dryfall in West Fork involved some low angle, friction, climbing, and non-climbers would really like a solid 100’ hand line up it. The up, climbs in West Fork were challenging in at least two spots. Made an Etrier from the hand line at one point. Crux was likely an up-squeeze section near the end of the difficulties. Do not take dogs in this Canyon. This canyon was a very long and physical day. Kim and Bret would like it, but Roxy would not. Coming up the west fork was really beautiful and the highlight of the day.
6hC2C, 9peeps,me,pie,toni/dave,kim,brett,brian,rob,kristFelix. Rescued tarantula. I dc’d 100%- thus only needed 100ft rope and handline. Next time take just these two. 60m rope was a pain. Nailed approach @25 minutes.
C2c3h. Roxy brian kristin me pie Bailed from second exit due to water/high stemming. Might be able to shimmy down and continue in dry conditions. Bailed halfway down. Still had solid teamwork and 12’ stemming. Trundled huge Boulder after it shifted during down climbing.
3.5c2c including 1hr. detour up main fork to great chamber. todd, Kristin, me. 30 minutes flood exposure for this fast group.
3.5c2c including 1hr. detour up main fork to great chamber. todd, Kristin, me. 30 minutes flood exposure for this fast group.
Rainy weather so walked down the short exit to LBJ. From LBJ exit back to camper 1 hour (20 minute steep hike out of canyon)
Nancy Dwight Kim Brett Toni. Four hours car to car. Took to 125 foot ropes. Canyon was dry anchors were good except I didn’t fully trust the solution pocket anchor.
6.5c2c,pie me toni jordan K&B, biffed exit lost 1Hr, took 70m & two 125ft ropes. Dry. Third big rap has hidden anchor inside chimney on rt- we used chock stone in waterway. First rap used 70m and one 125ft pull cord. Amazing canyon. Once on top of Mesa follow cutoff trail (not Ryan) back across head of Arscenic to trailhead
LF 3.45c2c K&B Toni Jord D&N. Dry anchors good. I was able to DC 100%. Only used 50’ rope for group hooked to meat. Squeeze was easy
6hC2C,me,pi,brett,kim.day after rain, canyon full, a little unavoidable water to 3', stemmed over deeper?,K&B 1st canyon ever. first tracks! 1 mandatory rap@ pour-off. 14'
4hc2c,boone,toddF,bri,toni,me, Nancy, approach was ok with Todd short-rope for boone. we rigged a pulley traverse over water for packs, boone,pi. most got wet at end pothole.
hog1,6.5h c2c, favhog!5*,me.pi.bri.krfelix.toni.rob,huge slog deproach with a belay@exit lip(left),25ft.high stemming for rob&bri, long canyon, not scary but kinda tight & physical.
4hc2c,crowded,boone,krfelix,toni,rob,bri,pi,me. Boone's first slot. he kept up.
Date is a guess. Unexpectedly wet. Swam fully at last pothole. Got COLD. roxy Connor Brett Kim Nancy me.
not done yet. see: https://dyeclan.com/outdooractivities/canyoneering/?page=shenanigans-canyon C3 exit, tight like midLep, meat anchor then I do The Grim Crawl
2 Hours with Pico and Dwight. Beautiful canyon. Wet from log dam down. Drought year! Wear neoprene socks next time. We looped rope around tree trunk far back from rappel and needed all of 70 meters.
date is a guess. Dwight Nancy Toni. plenty of rapping off my harness. beautiful.
7c2c,group of 5, last rap is single rope and complex, use high friction device, end in a freerap, long hike back
date is a guess. I think we dogs this with Brian and Rob?. hiked endlessly
Did West form today. Really nice and more slotty for longer than East. 3hc2c
Great canyon. Between the two Wells is tight. I do not believe you can avoid squeezing through.
Went down little West Fork to Confluence and up main Fork to repel point back down Main fork and it exited via West Canyon to the road. Camped at Sand pipes
me,pi, did middle fork. tight-fun, have done all 3 forks now. RF is good beginner, LF is good beginner but tight.
3hc2c, bill,roxy,pie,me. dry, notkeeper.took 100ft&PC.
3hc2c,bill,roxy,pie,me. exposure melted R, but she prevailed.
bill, roxy, pie,me did RF. dry, R went up LF into Belfast Blvd and she loved it. next time we do LF.
2.15c2c,NnDnP, ankle deep despite drought. log dam is vertical and slippery. Rap was in a light waterfall into a crotch deep pool. Used full 70 from huge tree anchor. VERY pretty, not squeezy but narrow.
3.45c2c me, suzy. only rapped once (out of the pothole) after the big entry rap. a LOT of deep, dark, amazing, contorted shimmying. Easier than Chambers, but more squeezing for longer and almost as tight.
Pie,Toni,Suzy,me. c2c4?, tight, climbing, advanced, PHYSICAL, fun.
all anchors were removed. bailed. a$$0s
5hc2c,piebrirobme, best of the 3 slots here. AMAZING chamber. likely 5 raps total. dry. anchors are good. road is ok for pearl.
4.15c2c, dry, least fav. of the 3 slots here. still good. road ok for pearl
4hrs. C2C, took Pico, tight but not clostrphbc, only used rope to lower Pico, no harness needed, road is good, exhausting.
hog 2 only, 3.75 hrsC2C-biffed entry twice! Ryan traverse is sketch, Kelsy(walk out to ridge on RDC and down slickrock to a bit below R1) is good. 100ft. rope &100ft. pull-cord, headlights, very tight squeeze-claustrophobic! exit upclimb is a hump!
3hr. C2C, must swim, water not freezing in May, only need 30ft. hand-line *unless* you are not skinny- then take 100ft. rope for last rap to avoid tight squeeze. parked JLNU before wash & walked in. good beginner canyon, water is not sustained. semi-keeper is limit of my reach boosting Nancy.
date is a guess, rained 8hrs. day before, TnR and is were borderline hypothermic, much better with no shirt and after the last (big) rap, went up Chute
date is a guess. Bill,Roxy, pie,me. their first slot.
took pico. date is a guess
perhaps my favorite canyon yet. big day, nailed everything. rope would not pull from mid-stage anchor at first big rap into *amazing* chamber. group of 6 =7 hours car to (shuttle) car. verizon near TH.
Pretty hard to nail the approach! Go down canyon 50 ft. at the crossing of the top of the West (first) fork to continue the approach up an easy ramp. If we had not done it the day before it would have added an hour to our time. Down east, up west = total 5.5 hours car to car. all in all, a very physical day. East fork was good, West Fork was spectacular. West Fork has some fairly challenging up climbs.
did approach to far (E) fork for a hike. At first (W) fork, go RDC about 100 feet and follow easy 2nd class ramp up and left to far rim. Verizon LTE @TH.
great, short, poison ivy
date is a total guess. This was one of our very first Slot Canyons. We were not doing technical Canyon at that point.
this date is a total guess. Nancy and I did this with Angus.
