With Jeff. Great canyon. Open with minimal narrows but still fun.
Overland route to avoid potholes after 2nd rappel. Dea set up an anchor on tree
good canyon, hitchhiked to top w/ Martha, Hannah. Hannah says nothing compared to other Zion canyons, although it improves halfway down.
On Friday, May 23, we completed the approach hike to Spry Canyon (3B) in 1 hour and 15 minutes, covering 2 miles and ascending 800 feet in elevation. Our journey through the canyon took about 2.5 hours, during which we completed 11 rappels. The existing anchors were in good condition. Although we wore wetsuits, they were mostly unnecessary since there wasn’t much water in the canyon. There was one pool that was chest-deep and several shallow pools. Our group of three finished the Spry Canyon from car to car in four and a half hours. Spry wasn’t an especially memorable canyon. There were a few scenic areas, especially the final rappels, but all and all it’s a one and done for me. I don’t need to do Spry again.
Spry : 9/7/24 Every drop can be fiddle sticked. Did with Ian, Rebecca, and Anthony. Leap frogged and went fast, then slowed down so we didn't get out to early. Road trip Ryan instructions are pretty accurate. Pretty straight forward. Could do 200', 120' and fiddle stick. We had that with an additional 80'. Foul water with a few wades, with one chest deep. End up to road is a bit of a bush whack.
Long approach and exit.
done with Chin?
Just me and Kylie!
With Aud. Started at 8am, finished around 1:30-2? A few mostly avoidable stinky potholes. had wetsuit booties. anchors in great shape, but so many rope grooves. Many poorly placed bolts IMO. Pretty, but not a must-do.
Very approx date- did with Ben and Alycia, out after dark
Longer than expected. A couple of swimmers.
very fun canyon. last rappel is pretty sweet. did w andrew, quinn, alec. car to car in 8 hours, werent going very fast. we hit it in pretty dry conditions, only got wet before rappel 9.
R1 - 50 m ( 165 ft. ) down the slab. R2 - The canyon slots up and drops. Take the trail on the left and rap 15 m ( 50 ft. ). R3 - A short 6 m ( 20 ft. ) drop can be downclimbed or rappelled. R4 - Reach across the slot and carefully rig this rappel anchor, then rappel 15 m ( 50 ft. ). R5 - A fairly big 30 m ( 99 ft. ) drop. R6 - From a tree on the left. 30 m ( 99 ft. ) R7 - 15 m ( 50 ft. ), continue the rappel past the pool 1/2 way down. R8 - 15 m ( 50 ft. ) R9 - 20 m ( 66 ft. ) R10 - 20 m ( 66 ft. ) the canyon is now open. Social trails avoid the next and final rappel, but please stay in the watercourse and do the final rappel to avoid further erosion. R11 - 32 m ( 105 ft. ) down the cliff face. Exit (20-30 minutes)
Lee Katherine Goldstein, Brian Reischl, Hendricks Schmidt, Jessica Kelly Of note: Pulling down a dead Rocky Mountain sheep on the first rappel. 😖
Rained 2 days before. This canyon was flowing a trickle of water and all the pools were full to the brim. We brought wetsuits but probably didn't need them as there was so much sun. Nevertheless it wasn't unpleasant with them on. The approach was incredibly steep and hot. We got started at 9am. The canyon itself offered a lot of variety and was quite enjoyed.
DRY! We only got in water up to our ankles the entire canyon. Fun, and at times challenging down climbs.
late start after doing keyhole. fun, straight forward canyon. rough grooves, but overall fun. scary but very fun final 200 rap
Fun canyon, a swim or two, but no wetsuits needed.
fun fun fun
Hot approach in the summer
Threatened by weather towards the end, but otherwise great. Traveling solo and quiet startled two herds of big horned sheep.
4 people max in my opinion to move faster. Really great canyon when dry ish pot holes can be avoided.
Amazingly no water!
