Pretty Canyon. Ran into 2 German guys at the last rappels. Mystery Springs and the final drop were excellent. The only neoprene I used was a thin wetsuit shirt before entering Mystery Springs (short swimmer), and booties. The earlier narrows section was nice as well. The "lake" was completely dry. The non-technical descent into the canyon was loose. Took 4 of us experienced canyoneers 4:20 from car to bus.
Scenic Canyon, once in, all the way down to Boundary. We exited up the Boundary sneak, with ascenders, which was very demanding and long. Little to no actual flow in the technical section, although the potholes were full and chilly. We accidentally sunk my Canyon Wire in a pothole about 158' down, but Monica was able to hook it with her foot after sinking herself with two large rocks. Took my muscles and tendons a week to fully recover from this canyon. 9 hours for our group of 4 experienced canyoneers.
Hiked to the arch after the eclipse! Very cool arches. Approach was dry; no pool wading. Saw a leopard lizard. Road approach was rough, nice to have my tacoma. Passed an insane, fast prius coming out, leaving parts along the way. Must have been a rental.
Very nice to finish the canyon into the E.F. of the Virgin River! Warm day, took wetsuits but didn't use them. Just got wet to waist. Scenic but long approach and exit.
Das Boot! Quite the experience. Beautiful, cold, rigorous, long. Used my 2-piece, scuba wetsuit (~5:10); wouldnât have wanted any less neoprene.
First and especially 4th raps are nice. 1st time rappelling onto ice. Mud splash-down! 4WD exit TH is worth it. Beautiful.
Fun short canyon. Cool old cattle trail ramp. The canyon starts as just a mellow wash, but abruptly finishes with a bang--several successive raps ending in the echo chamber. Last rappel is very nice. Took us < 3 hours. We saw no rattlesnakes; I will start calling it Midget Rattler after I see one there.
Beautiful fun drop into the Golden Cathedral. The pool was about 3' deep. We took wetsuits, but didn't use them. The keeper pothole was mostly dry and deep! Most of us used the rappel to get past it. Went down Fence Canyon, but used the direct, sandy route for the exit.
Good half-day canyon. Was quite dry for us though--would have been more interesting with pools. The narrows were cool, but if you need to go high, it takes some effort. One in our party needed to go high for the first half of the narrows, but was able to drop down and squeeze through the 2nd half (by exhaling). Kind of interesting 4th class crack exit.
8:30 hours. Couldn't completely avoid water, but mostly. Last rap free hang was spinning due to rope twist; not awesome. Beautiful canyon though, including approach (after leaving the masses behind at Angels Landing).
Awesome. Very wet, very cold water. I thought the first pool was going to be about a foot deep. I eased in and disappeared! Glad I had my THICK wetsuit on. Super cool canyon.
Very pretty, but very very short. Dry, fun. Worth it. Last deadman anchor in place and fine.
Cool technical section, although brief. Used hook to get into semi-keeper pothole. We were all able to climb out.
Very pretty. Ages well as a memory. One of the deadman anchors was garbage though--easily pulled up by one hand. We totally redid it with a much bigger rock and burried. Fiddlesticked 4 raps. Couldn't avoid all water; just had a neoprene top, which was fine.
Jumped into one hole. Approach funky being close to I-70 and fence. Came across bighorn sheep.
Nice hike and soak, although a bit more crowded than I would like. Baby chuckwallas on trail.
Very nice. Exceeded expectations in terms of slot length and beauty. DC 1st rap. Time 4:20. Completely dry. Nice day, once out of the wind up top.
Some fun down climbs. Saw no one else. Completely dry. The keeper pothole wasn't a keeper at all. Dry and easily climbed out of. We weren't even sure which pothole was supposedly the keeper until thinking about it after we were done. There were 5 anchors I think; we used 3 and DC the other two. Last downclimb (rap) was fun. Bushwack at bottom was ugly. Time 3:20.
High stemming. Very energetic. I was sweating like Raffa. Climber's exit was a grunt. Very top 2 downclimbs were sketchy so we avoided. Destroyed my pants. We avoided all water. Side-rimming one pothole was tough!
Fun Cayon. Took 4x4 road to the end at the top! Avoided all water--walked ledge around last one in Emerald City. Ledge walked last rappel. Rappelled Tic Tok hole--cool! Watch placement of anchor--needs to be back.
High stemming, but not too difficult. Rap from log had a tricky start but was cool. The dark, aweful pothole was spooky--avoided.
Nice pools. Did without wetsuit and was only chilly for 20 minutes. 2 jumpers, 1 quite exciting, even though water levels were low. Shortcut descent was tricky to navigate; we did it in 2 rappels.
Long, awesome hike with Meg, Maya, and Shawn. Gaia GPS said we went 10.4 miles, including a visit to the nice slot. Scrambled up the moki steps above the slot, but did not go too far (I should next time). Shmypass would have wigged out Bridget a bit. Awesome views from the Rim. Took us 6:45 from 4WD TH.
Beautiful hike with Meg, Maya, and Shawn. Saw no one else. Fun narrows down low.
Pretty wash. Hiked down 3 miles, then returned, with Meg, Maya, and Shawn.
Hike with Meg, Maya, and Shawn. Could have ridden mtn. bikes all the way to the hands, had we understood the initial river crossings. Lots of cow hoof prints on the trail would have made it bumpy though. Eriogonum inflatum.
Hiked up from eastern park boundary to the tanks, then explored Waterpocket Canyon, which is cool, with Meg, Maya, and Shawn.
Hiked down to tanks from main TH with Conor, Meg, Maya, Dave, and Shawn. Tanks were frozen.
Very nice. 1st Big drop by the arch was impressive. Only needed to get one foot wet (pool below arch). Bolts at last rappel. Nice weather for us. Quick side hike up the fin definitely worth the time for the view.
Fun. A bit of an intimidating transition to free hang on last big rappel. 1st rappel off tree definitely > 100' and requires a pull cord if using a 60m rope.
Beautiful canyon! Pothole Alley was great. All potholes full--no keepers. No need for a rope this time. I should have brought a full wetsuit! Time for 3 of us: 6:50 (waited to pass one group for a bit at the narrowest part).
Short, fun little canyon. Explored down Eardley a bit, as well as up, before the exit. Potholes full; a few short swims and wades.
Sketchy. Conor and Jhole went HIGH, I went through. Lots of spiders in the dark on the wall. Don't slip. Didn't have wetsuit. I got wet. Didn't need escape tools with the water level in the cauldron.
Water levels low. Swam through the underwater passage under the bridge. Fun canyon, but would be super fun with more water. Went into the KPH variation, but couldn't find an anchor at the final rappel, so climbed out (not recommended) & went back into main Woody .
Nice, but would have been way better with water! It was dry, due to the dry year. Had to use hook to get down one section. Party behind us used it and returned it to us. Dead ringtail cat in one pothole.
Fun with Bridget and Conor
Very nice. lovely hot soak. Helped a lost guy get out of the canyon.
Did wife 5. Nice. Pretty. Wet up to thighs in pothole alley.
Long! but nice. 11.5 hours, with 5 hours in the 1-mile slot. Fall colors towards the end of Spring Canyon were nice.
Fun canyon, lots of swimming! Saw 6 anchors, did 4 rappels (and some spicy down climbing). Two stage rappel can be done in one stage (top) with shorter rope. Then down-climb or rap the 2nd stage separately (there was an anchor there).
Great canyon! Fun down climbing, swimming, and a pothole escape. There was a 4" scorpion in the keeper pothole.
Awesome!! Floated it in a Pack Raft @ 180 cfs. One of the best floats ever. Might be able to enjoy it with less flow, but not tons less.
The canyon that keeps on giving.
Excellent canyon. Exited up Ramp, which is beautiful. I wish there was a little more water in the potholes, but it was still awesome.
Rather dry--only needed to get wet in last pot hole before the 1st rap. Middle is deep, and can be jumped into, but a ledge on the right side allowed for a waist deep crossing.
Did it without wetsuits. Swam the diamond pool. Did not see how to fit through the narrows (I'm 5'9" & 160), so went up and over; fairly rigorous & a bit nervy.
Great canyon. Totally dry. Love the last, dark rap.
Fun, but heinous rope pull from the 2-stage rappel, which can be split into 2 raps, which we did. Top anchor should probably be extended closer to top edge of rap. Exit is a grunt; we did it in the dark.
Fun down climbs at end
Fun. Nice last rappel. Climbers exit was fine.
Great rappel! 2nd stage is cool.
Slot after slot. Last section is tight! And dramatic.
Did west Lep. Great downclimbing. Very worthwhile.
Short and very sweet. 3 of us did it in 1:20.
Fun down climb instead of 1st rappel. Used knot for anchor on last (only) rappel.
Pretty, but pretty busy. No real technical challenges.
Really fun and beautiful raps.
Fun canyon, a swim or two, but no wetsuits needed.
Nice, with a few fun downclimbs. Drier than normal.
2nd rap is nice.
Sweet!
Descended from the top. Nice canyon! Cold in March though; full wetsuit needed, neoprene gloves much appreciated!
Did the main (east) fork. Fun and awesome!
Nice!
1st canyon in the Roost. Descended Little Blue and ascended the Middle Fork. Nice narrows in the middle. Got a work out climbing up.
COLD at end of March (I bought neoprene gloves after that), but awesome!
Very nice!
Sweet canyon! Fun rapping through the arch.
Fun downclimbing and great exit from the last crack!
Did Hog 1 and 2. Hog 2 was awesome! great downclimbing at the exit, exciting blind rap to a pool, and crazy 1st rap from a deadman.
Did east Lep--very fun!
1st canyoneering adventure!
