Drove cottonwood canyon from Kanab side to Arch. Cool canyon. Good road. Had to wait for cows and cowboys to go by.

Zebra and Tunnel Slot - Escalante

Hiked this with Doug, Danny and Khristina. Zebra had a lot of water and we didn’t make it in far enough to see its namesake. Hike out and above canyon to look in. We’re we at the right canyon? Hike over to other canyon but it was full of water.

Escalante Petrified Forest State Park

Camped with Danny and Khristina earlier this month and hiked the petrified forest loop. Lots of petrified wood, nice hike. Campground has covered picnic tables and showers.

100 Hands Panel - Highway 12

Buckskin Gulch - Paria

Hiked down Pariah to buckskin and back-about 16 miles. Water was low, nothing above knees.

Sid and Charley - Northern Swell

Made it into Sid and charley. Road off Moore’s cutoff was not RIGHT across from another road. Other road was up ahead (coming from Moore). Road was not great for Van … sandy with big ruts. No gate or cow grate at .2 miles per RT Ryan but there was a grate at 2.5. Towers we camped right at the towers. Doug led the tower. Looked harder than described. I was going to jug up and then decided not to. Went for a hike afterwards to find petroglyphs and granary in right side of Canyon. Could not find rock art loop. found Luke in the morning. Directions were wrong. When going down wash, go for about 19 minutes before finding the left fork. Easier to get up out of wash and go on maiTrail going left.

Road was not great for Van but we made it in to towers. Doug lead tower and I decided not to climb it. I was going to jug up the tower and by the time Doug finished I lost all enthusiasm. Doug rapped down and cleaned climb. Rope was stuck and had to jug up. Went to pictograph on right side of canyon near granary wall. It was in good shape. Also snake to right if granary. We tried to find rock art loop and failed. Maybe tomorrow morning.

San Rafael Knob - Central Swell

Camped at top of Devil’s Canyon and bike down to canyon floor. Too sandy to continue biking. When we go to the Knob there was a cairned trail on the right which we followed up to the north side of a west facing ridge. The class 4 stuff was fine-solid rock slab. Fun hiking to the top of the Knob and beautiful views. The hike out was fast but biking out of the canyon was slow. A lot of walking. Got a late start for the hike-started around 1:30 pm but it only took about 4.5 hours. Around 2.6 miles biking and 8 miles hiking.

Nice nice Canyon. Never found the petroglyphs, even though we really looked hard. Went all the way to the end of the canyon and back. Short, narrow, swim call sculpted rock.

Goblin Valley - Southern Swell

Arrived at night and shared blm campground with family that let us stay. Climbed rocks in morning to watch annular solar eclipse (ring of fire). 9-11am. It was cool. Lots of people watching from ridges/rocks. Big cheer went up with ring of fire at 100%. Drove in to hike Crack Canyon afterwards and camp. LOTS of dispersed camping

2nd time here-thought Danny and Khristina should see it before we left. Good short hike with interesting petroglyphs and Mormon signatures on wall. Last time Doug and I were here we hike up to the Tanks at the end of the trail

Cassidy Arch Canyon - Capitol Reef

Did this canyon with Danny and Khristina. In hindsight probably not a good idea because Danny was really scared. The rappels were great. However I wish there was more hiking between each rappel. The climb up to the Arch was relatively short and it was a bit funky getting Danny and Khristina into the first rappel. Payback for the fake spear point!

Swasey's Cabin - Central Swell

Very sandy. Cabin has a bolted tower near it. Cool trails around it. Saw this the same day as Lone Warrior petroglyph.

Goblin's Lair - Goblin Valley

Fun hike up slab by rock and short rap into goblins lair. Took us awhile to find where to rap and we wandered around rocks.

Ferns Nipple - Capitol Reef

Not exactly sure what year/date we did this hike. Fun to get up to Ferns with some route finding. Great slab hiking to top. Coming down was sketchy in a couple parts. There was one area with slab and sand in it that was about 4 scary steps that I gave myself 25% chance of dying. Lots of exposure with a slip-not particularly hard just scary with potentially bad consequences. This was a GREAT hike. I would not bring beginners up with no approach shoes.

Did this with Chris Ernst and Doug. Amazing. Canyon. Luckily it was a drought year. Keeper holes were dry and we rapped down around first hole, and second hole was filled with sand and we could walk out of. Water at end when dropping through hole in cathedral. 16 mile hiking. Hot and really tired at end. Found arrowhead on way out
